I agree with Mongo, very old soldering iron. No clue about the rock though. If I had to guess, it could be a meteorite, but really no idea.

It would have originally had a wooden handle on it.....

Re: need a couple pieces id.

Solder iron had to have the mass to get the heat. Someone beat me to what the rock is. But if there is any doubt ask Joe Dirt

http://youtu.be/jXGV-MT-TmU

Is the rock heavy for it's size?

What happens if you try to polish it? Mythbusters did on one of their episodes....

Re: need a couple pieces id.

I have an old soldering iron looks very similar but the head is just that iron not copper. Seems the solder would stick to the copper head as apposed to beading off the iron

Don't worry. As long as you didn't squeeze the ketchup onto it and dip your fries you'll be alright. Heck, that didn't even hurt JD.

If it's really light I wonder if it's a clinker, piece of spent coal.

Re: need a couple pieces id.

The copper things a soldering irons. You heat them until you get a green coloured flame off them. Then you rub them on a block of salamoniac to clean them then you have to melt a little solder on them until there shiny with solder on the tips. This procedure is called tinning your iron. It is done so that the solder will flow down the iron. Then say you want to solder two pieces of galvanized iron together you brush a little muratic acid on both pieces. Then take your hot iron and hold it down on the sheet metal and slowly apply solder to the iron. It will flow down the iron and make your soldered joint. Usually you use 2 at a time one is heating while the other is being used.

As for the rock looking thing I wonder if it is burnt out Cole from a forge. (Slag)
