Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

Well the old girl is in the garage for the winter but I hope this helps if you look back though the build you'll see all the parts for your caddy transplant also the wheels...its a stock wheel with 4" off backspace added it was cheap and easy.....as far as tire size you can run up to a 29x18x 15 with out rubbing with a C notch...all the info is there but if you have any question just hit me up...

the good news is the same been running the HELL out of it and love it and I get 18 MPG if you can keep your foot out of it!!!! LMAO

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

A lot of time people never give any up dates

Well.............

5 years still running it as a truck you know dump, fire wood scrap steel, 8 11x24.5 truck tires or what ever.....still in bridge primer but it is faded and there is a small hole in the front fender ( of course its not the side I have a spare of).....still sees the occasional heavy right foot. Air ride still works fine but the compressor had Pooped out...I use the axillary air input and it stays for weeks.... I guess backing into the lake to launch the boat is a bad Idea if your compressor is in back...

So there you guys go..... guess all my Ideas and used up parts work pretty well together....
On a side note I'm thinking heavily about selling the old girl...well see???

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

the truck looks to be sold to a nice young man who plans on taking it to the next level... so looks like its working days will be over soon........ I don't know how many total miles I have put on this, how many parts and stuff it has lugged around or towed as a shop truck....Its been 5 1/2 years (Holy crap) and I haven't done a thing to it except oil changes, add gas and drive the crap out of it.... The nice part is it will be local so I can answer and questions he might have and of course I turned him on the website....hopefully he will continue the build post...everyone here has been great and I hope to be into another old truck once I get moved and settled somewhere down south.

Thanx
Jeff

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

I just spent some time going over your thread and I really enjoyed it. I really like the 472
I've always wanted a 500 with 472 heads. Years ago I was out joy riding and came across an '62 Impala. I had to stop and look at it. It was up for sale. It was tubbed with a set of Torque thrust out back. But it had a Caddy 500 with a set of 472 heads and a sheet metal intake with three two barrels on it. It had a Ford 9 in the back, fiberglass bumpers and a ton of work done to it. I wish I had bought it. The guy wanted 3500 for it. Looking back I wished I would have bought it. I know that thing would have been fun. Live and learn.

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

thanx Rusty.... after it was all said and done I think the best fit for these trucks is a carb Vortec and a 700r.... they are bolt in and drivability is great...the caddy rocks but its mostly a torque monster

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

I hope you are still on the boards from time to time, I was wondering about your rear bag set up, if your notch was bigger would you be able to go lower or is that as low as it would go with the stock bag location anyway?

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

wait... is the red color primer? how much did it cost ruffly to paint it? i want to do that exact red color on my 70 but just didn't want to spend the money. but now I've got to primer the bed again but if i can do it in that red color ill just spend the extra cash and do the whole thing.

the first pic I hope you notice the front wheel height to the wheel well...surprising what a cupped lower and a set of bags will do..keep in mind that the same tires 235/75's where on the truck till the other day when I blew a cord out of one...... the rears are now 255/70's instead of the 31/10.5 all I did was a tire swap to get them on the rallies that where squited with Hammered grey/black rustolium out of a rattle can...I have also rolled the same paint ( satin black )onto the inside of the bed that I used on the frame it sure cleans things up on the cheap and wears like Iron...the last pic is a bit ahead but it shows the same profile after the cupped lowers and c Notch where put in plus a couple of the lowers before they where installed

the bed is pretty crappy the floor is full of pin holes both wheel well lips are shot and the head board is pretty rusty ( but I have plans ) but the paint on the inside and a rubber mat hide alot since this truck was JUST A BEATER..who was going to care ..so much for that I never thought it was going to be a DD

what size is that cup and what bags did you run?
