I'm replacing my power steering pump and it appears that the old fluid is a mix of ATF and PS Fluid... I think.

So what is the best way to flush out the stuff in the steering box?

Just turn it lock to lock and let it push it out. Don't worry about flushing unless you've got metal flakes in the system.

great way to get a fresh start ,just dump the old add new PS fluid then dump and run your system (turn wheels) again dump and add fresh. that should get you clean and fresh. they do also make inline PS filters ,witch is a good thing to add also.

Newer steering system (rack and pinion ) are more prone to issues from dirty fluid and due run hotter so fluid does break down ,most have filters built in to the system ,they also require changing fluid and filters at regular intervals.

Yes. Jack the front of the truck up to make it easier.

This is a good video on flushing the PS system from one of the major steering remanufacturing companies. Hopefully I copied and pasted correctly so you can see it.

I'm pretty sure ATF was the fluid specified originally. There's no issues mixing them.

After referencing the service manual, which in 1970 stated (1st choice) Power Steering Fluid and (2nd) ATF…. I decided to go with PS Fluid.

The crap in the bottle appears to be a mixture if anything……PS Fluid, AFT and motor oil(?). Wow this poor truck has had some rough years!
