I agree. I asked a paint-knowledgeable, fellow forum member who said there's probably a code on the can or at least a list of toners & how much of each used. If you still have the can used, please post a picture for us!

No info on the cans besides the paint brand info. I'll get ahold of the company and see if they saved the info, will report back shortly.

Interested in this color as well. Does anyone know if a '64 327 would have been the same color? I have seen tables that listed it that way, but they had a * by them saying that this is an assumption.

Thank you. Fingers crossed! It would be a huge help to those wanting to duplicate the original color as close as possible.

I apologize for my previous statement that it would be the same, however I think I read where the 327 wasn't available in trucks until 1966. Maybe someone else can verify.

Re: 66 C20 327, green original engine paint

I just recently bought a 1964 C30 Factory AIR 327 truck , pretty well documented 33,000 mile truck. Heres the valve cover and some engine shots ( much more on this truck has been posted). Another member also just found a 1964 C20 with a 327. We are coming to a conclusion that these are late 1964 factory builds . Possibly the start of these engines for production ?

If the can has a paper label the recipe might be written on the back. Don't know if they still do this. They should have it in their computer.

Very nice.
The last two engines I had have been black.
I don't understand black. You can't see oil leaks as easy.
I had kinda planned on doing chevy orange, but I like that green.

Guess that proves they did start arriving in trucks earlier than '66. Love these finds guys like you come up with! Looking at pics it's hard to tell with color, as the lighting might be different. The OP's newly painted pic looks a bit darker due to lighting. It makes his engine seem a little more green. Yours looks brighter & a bit more teal (like '60s Buick green). However, we're looking at two different painted areas (valve cover vs. flywheel) that have had different exposures to the elements.

Thanks for sharing your info.

That chart is way off Rocknrod . Never was a Chevy orange truck engine 60-66 , period. A lot of this stuff was done years ago , copied and posted in different places with little to no knowledge of this era trucks. I should note , I have confirmation on Chevy 1964 327s being green right from the Flint Michigan assembly plant. Bob Hensel was a very smart man , met him several times being from Wisconsin ( author of that color chart ) he also had the biggest all Chevy Library for the VCCA . Even those guys can get it wrong when they are not , lets say , experienced, in a certain field .

Heres some color samples. One valle cover is a 1963 292 cover. One is a 1966 327 cover and wire holder. The spray card Im holding up to the cover was done by theastronaut , a member here with a can of NOS Green engine paint I sent him.

Heres a 1960 C30 283 with 502 miles in truck green. Many of the larger truck V8s were green.

This has been discussed on other threads, but here it goes. 327 185 hp 2 BBL truck engine first introduced on C 50- C60 trucks in '62. This engine became a SPECIAL ORDER option on C 20-C 30's under COPO (Central Office Production Order ) around early '64 to early '65. During early '65 it was replaced with new 220 hp 4BBL version and became a REGULAR ORDER option on C 20's and C 30s only. For the '66 model year, it became a regular option on all C 10 thru 30's. Article from '64 camping magazine.

Yep, in my research on the forum I came across the thread (factory correct restoration?) where these pics were posted. I'm friends with John (theastronaut) on Facebook & made him aware of this thread when I found it.

Re: 66 C20 327, green original engine paint

With your engine mods, intake, cam, heads, etc. how does it drive with turbo 400 in your truck? Difference between stock and your upgraded 327?, is it a 350 crank and rods, in your 327 block?

Found in Camper Coachman magazine April '64. Unfortunately many who were involved in building these trucks when they were brand new, are no longer around to learn from. That is why we need to learn from era literature as much as possible. To me, history matters, knowledge is power. Here is some more from Oct '64 talking about the new 220 hp version vs. the older 185 hp version. Remember, at this point the 327 was a still a special order option, became a regular option around Spring '65. Photo shows a '64 C 30 which a Camper Dealer stocked with the special order 327 from May '64 Camper Coachman magazine. Not familiar with the lead time of magazines back then, so May issue might of been written in March?

I have had a couple different phone calls with the paint company and looks like they don't have my info saved for the paint mix. I'm going to need to bring my quart in and have them do a match to it.

Thanks for going the extra mile Cali, there are a lot of folks who would be interested in the formula for the correct color paint for the 292-327 and maybe someday we will have the correct color paint for the 230-250's and 283's!

Re: 66 C20 327, green original engine paint

FactoryStock,

Along the subject of "327 engines in 1964 C 20s and 30s" do you know if the Oakland plant was making big trucks, e.g. C50/60, in May of 64'. I ask because, have a 64' C20 with a 327, suffix is correct for HD truck UG and dated mid May 64.
It is a totally loaded truck from CA desert, has three gas tanks.

Question thinking about, where did the special order 337s in 64' come from, e.g. Supply line for big truck line at that plant, or did flint specially make these 327s for each, or some plants, to be use in C20/30s.

Still confirming that mine is original 327 install, looks like it.
O Oakland mid May 1964, engine suffix pad. The VIN is around 170,000.

Thanks,
Les

I guess it's my fault for getting you involved in all this, but I knew after finding this thread that so many folks could benefit if you were able to help at all. It sucks they don't have the info saved; but if you're willing to take your quart in to be matched, I know I personally will be very grateful. I've been holding off buying paint for mine until I knew if you'd be able to get the info needed to duplicate your color.

When I got the truck it had been sitting in a field for years and wasn't running, so I never got to drive it stock to compare. After the engine rebuild with all the original stuff I put it on a engine dyno which came out to low 200 hp range, that prompted me to put the double hump heads and corvette intake and headers before dropping it in the truck which brought me closer to 300. Runs well!
