67 4wd Low/High range?

did the 67s come with low and high range in the 4wd? my '67 swb stepper seems to work fine in 4wd, but i cant feel it shift into high/low range positions when working the transfer case lever...

thanks for any insight...

Re: 67 4wd Low/High range?

I believe the original transfer case would be a T221. If that is what you have, then you should have a 4 low range. You should check the shift linkage. On my T221, the holes in the bar were so worn and sloppy, it was hard to tell what gear you were in. I can see where if the linkage was worn enough, that you might not be able to get into some gears at all. My fix was to drill the holes and install bushings and use new pins.

Re: 67 4wd Low/High range?

The Rockwell T-221 has a 2-high, 4-high, Neutral, and 4-low.
These Tcases have a really fussy linkage, and if it is cobbled together with make it work parts.. Finding a gear is kind of tough, especially if the shift detent springs are weak.

In my case, they were very weak and I stuck in some stiff springs which turned out to be the kind you needed your foot to shift in and out of gear. Then I had it out again and clipped a coil out of each spring, now I can shift in and out of gears normally and positively.

What transmission are you running, and what front axle hubs do you have?

Mine is the manual transmission SM-465, with the original D-44 closed knuckle large hubs. I have found that if these hubs are not lubed right, as in having crusty lube in them they won't lock on colder conditions.

Again in my situation I know before driving 10 feet if I am locked up front or not, and I can tell whether I am in 4-low or 4-high. Neutral goes with out saying... Since you won't go anywhere

Is your shifter straight up, or is it curved in a crescent shape?

Over the years, people have cobbled together some strange things with these old trucks using custom shifters and linkages or using later model parts to make things work.

Here is the shift pattern for a T-221.

Re: 67 4wd Low/High range?

Has anyone tried to fabricate a split shifter for the T221?
