Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

I am a little late to the thread but this is what I used to mate a 1994 nv4500 to a 2003 5.3.

Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

For some reason the site will not let me upload pictures of everything bolted up. One thing I would recommend is to have the new flywheel resurfaced. The transmission bolted right up except for one bolt.

Why resurface a new flywheel? It's already machined after casting. Isn't that flat enough?

Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

Side note( this pilot bearing : 12557583)
I put a straight edge on it right out of the box and it was beveled a lot. I could have just bolted it on but it would have taken a lot of miles off from the life of the clutch plate. By having it resurfaced I probably added thousands of miles to the life of the clutch and it was only 30 something dollars.

I will try to add pictures of the hydraulic setup. To be honest it was pretty straight forward after figuring out the flywheel / clutch combo.

ChevyCO

Were you using the stock 92-94 bellhousing with the pass. side external slave?

What year truck was this going into? What slave and master did you use, and how did you adapt them together?

I'm intending to use the squarebody master and the gmt400 slave, but have not decided how they'll be connected together yet.

Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

This is in a 1968 k20 with a lift. I used the factory slave cylinder and did not have any issues with it fitting. I used a master from a Ford F-250 circa 1990. I used old parts from the for mock up and then bought new stuff from NAPA. The master and the slave use similar type of fitting that you can get online. Once I had the fittings, I went to a hose shop and bought rubber/nylon line and connected them. It was really easy to bleed the whole system. I was expecting the hydraulic system to give me the most trouble but it was probably the easiest thing. I am going to try to send you a picture of the master directly because I can’t upload it here. I usually don’t post on here but, this swap isn’t very common and not a lot of info is available. I hope this helps.

Question Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

I originally tried this for a customer 10 years ago, I ended up needing an adjustable throw out bearing if memory serves. So the customer decided on a Ram 1550x flywheel instead.

Do you have your setup moving/driving? Fast forward 10+ years and I am looking to mate the 1993-94 NV4500 I already have to a 2005 LQ4 6.0 and if I didn't have to blow $300-400 on a custom flywheel, that would be great. The parts you posted would help most of save a healthy chunk of coin.

Did you pull the alignment dowels on the 1050 flywheel?

Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

I have had it going for about a year, no issues what so ever. Multiple road trips and off road trips ( I live in Denver and the traffic sucks, so the clutch gets used a lot). There was enough clearance between pressure plate and the throw-out bearing that I wasn’t concerned. To be honest I don’t remember if I took the dowels out or enlarged the holes in a pressure plate. Also, I forgot to mention earlier, I used an Advanced-Adapter adapter to connect the nv4500 to a np205. It’s a slip yoke transfer case and I was able to use a driveshaft out of a 2004 Silverado 2500 (one piece). It fit perfectly.

I’m trying to follow this thread 3 years later , but are you saying you connected a pre 96 GM NV4500 to an LS using the stock NV bellhousing, and the flywheel was the only problem? It’s late maybe I misread .

Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

Yes, the nv4500 was out of a 1 ton Chevy with a 350 so it matches up to the LS block minus one bell-housing bolt. The flywheel I used is a SACHS NFW1050. It can also be looked up as a flywheel from a 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 6.0L V8

Also, apologies to Ford Assassin for not replying, I didn’t see the notification.

Re: Mating a NV4500 to a LS 5.3

Thanks for the reply. I have a NV4500 out of a 95 Chevy with a 350. I’m still on the fence as to using another small block or going to an LS. It is good to know I can use the stock bellhousing with the LS. It is nice to find someone who has first hand knowledge of my exact application.
