Best fan temps

I am running a 2001 5.3 4L60E. 2 electric fans.
Factory settings are fan 1 on at 219 F off at 212 F. Fan 2 on at 226 F off 219 F.

Thinking about changing to Fan 1 on at 200 F off at 196 F. Fan 2 on at 206 F off at 202 F.

I live in the mid west summer temps can run in the 100 F to 0 F in winter.

Any body got any input on what is the best temps to set Fans at.

Re: Best fan temps

What's your engine operating temp?....they set my fans on at 175 and 180....my 6.0 never gets over 185 in summer even pulling 9500lb loaded trailer...I've been criticized for them being low on a LS engine but I've seen no issues arise from from it...that's just the way my dyno man set it up...

Re: Best fan temps

Thanks Greg

My 5.3 at idle gets to 220 F. I am still working on Bed & minor cab damage so I have not ran it down the road. Gm set the temps. at 220 F for more efficiency fuel economy. I hoping by lowering temps. I can squeeze another 200,000 out of this 5.3. I have 1 pcm set at factory temp. settings and 1 pcm set at lower temps. Here in a few months (when project hits the road) I can do some test runs see if temps. makes any difference.

Re: Best fan temps

from my understanding this "newer" gen 3 stuff runs hotter from the factory than what we normally like to see. They have a higher thermostat so those fan temps are probably right based on that. I think in part I understood it was for emisions but I am not sure on that.
I installed a 180 thermostat in mine and in turn lowered the temp settings for my fans to match that. It wont hurt to run hotter like yours are set I just didn't and don't like seeing my temperature that high.

Re: Best fan temps

My '84 with a LQ4 has a factory 195* thermostat. It runs at about 197* all day long. Factory dual fan setup only comes on when sitting in traffic in the summer. Brings it right back to 195* in about a minute. No A/C so I don't think my fans have ever been on high. I am running a gigantic Cadillac Escalade radiator and factory relays fan set up.

My crasher LQ4 in my 86 has a clutch fan and 195* thermostat with no upper shroud and also runs at 197* all day long. 1986 style radiator.

a 160? AFAIK that didn't come out of the factory that way. 160 is a pretty cold stat, especially if your in an area that gets all 4 seasons.

Re: Best fan temps

I was surprised when I changed the water pump and found that...it was low mileage and didn't look like it had ever been apart...came from a escalade....

Your new settings are pretty close to where mine are set and even on a 100 degree day in traffic my temp is steady at 200 degrees. Both fans run the majority of the time but it's not a bad thing to have more air circulating through the engine bay.
