L31 Intake Gasket W/Carb?

I'm getting ready to install my Edelebrok Intake on my new L31 5.7 small block. (I will be running a Holley carb)
Qusetion- What is the best intake gasket to get?
- Should I purchase one for a 97 5.7?
Any help appreciated.

Re: L31 Intake Gasket W/Carb?

I've run thick paper gaskets that I port matched in the past (Fel-Pro, can't remember #) After a while they would leak coolant (go figure?!) I switched to Fel-Pro MS98000T gasket set. They are metal gaskets with rubber seals. I run them on every 5.7 vortec, stock intake or not. (FYI -The set only comes with one valve cover gasket)

There is a part number that gets you just the intake gaskets that are in the MS98000T set, but I can't seem to find it now. The gaskets that are in the MS98000T set are about the best you can get for the Vortec. Yes you could spec the gaskets for a '97 5.7.....the '96-'02 Vortec 5.7's are all the same.

Re: L31 Intake Gasket W/Carb?

This is the intake set I was trying to remember last night. All it is ,is the intake gaskets and a tube of RTV for the ends. I was mistaken though on the gaskets being the same as in the MS98000T set. These are plastic with the seal around all the ports.

Only run the metal with rubber sealer around the ports. All others were previous, failed versions.

Re: L31 Intake Gasket W/Carb?

When I was building my 383 it has Edelbrock heads and intake so I ordered an Edelbrock gasket set. The package had Edelbrock on the outside and Fel-pro 1255 gaskets inside so now I just buy Fel-pro 1255 gaskets. So far no problems.

Is this the correct part number? This is what Auto Zone gave me. It's supposed to be correct without all the extra gaskets I dont need. (just not sure if it is quality or not) Can't open it or its not returnable

Failed how?
the oem plastic intake and dexaclog coolant?
Or have these failed with the carbed alum intakes and normal green coolant..?

I ask because if you look at all plastic intake gaskets now they are o ring rubber type around ports..

And the alum is a tad stronger than the plastic and the span between the bolts..

You are correct, they are not the 1255 gaskets they are plastic with the rubber seal like the OE gaskets. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm with you here. The later version plastic ones don't seam to fail as often as the originals, maybe the plastic composition was changed? Or maybe it's because I switch them to green coolant. I believe the biggest issue was the dexcool.

One other thing I do with vortec intake manifolds - I try not to bolt any accessories to the manifold because the bolt torque is so low I don't want something "working" the manifold back & forth. (for example: if you run the TBI serp belt setup the A/C compressor has a brace that runs back & bolts to the intake) If I do bolt to the intake I use a stud, torque the nut down to spec. then bolt the brace down on top of that.

sorry had to. I have no idea what the specific failures are, only that they constantly failed and re-designed the part, twice. That's good enough reason for me.
