K5 brakes?

I'm getting ready to change the brakes in my K5 and it has the Dana 44 in front still but it has been converted to 8 lug and was wondering what brakes people have been using before I get the wrong ones. I didn't build the truck but I'm assuming that it would be the stock brakes.

Re: K5 brakes?

The K5's were never 8 lug axles to begin with, so front (maybe some pads are the same) and definitely rear brakes will not be stock.

If the front is truly a D44 (not the stock 10 bolt or a swapped 3/4 ton 10 bolt), then the front axle came from a 73-80 GM 3/4 ton. Its a starting place, but I think there were a few versions of brakes based upon GVWR. You may want to take your parts down to the store to match them up.

The rear could be a 14 bolt full floater or semi floater. Both have huge brakes compared to the stock 10 bolt. Not even close

It would also help to know where the axles came from so you can reference this info if you need to do other service.

Re: K5 brakes?

Well I know the rear is a 14 FF with the 11in shoes, the drums look smaller compared to the 79s drums. Thank you for the info I figured I would have to take the parts to to the store to compare but was just curious. And I will have to double check the front axle to see what it is for sure.

Re: K5 brakes?

My 83 has a FF from a 73, also with the 11 inch brakes. The higher GVWR trucks had the 13 inch brakes I believe, which explains your 79 having bigger brakes. Is it a Camper Special?

Re: K5 brakes?

I'm not sure, the SPID is gone and there isn't any badges. The GVRW is 8700 if I remember right
