Installing Mirrors - HOW?

I hate the mirrors on my truck, and bought some to throw on instead...pretty much the standard fare. Taking the old ones off was a no brainer, but naturally the new ones are a different hole pattern and probably will mount in a slightly different position anyways, but I'm stumped.

I have a backing plate with threaded holes so you can mount with machine screws, but have no idea how to access the backside (inside the door) to install. I pulled the plastic door panel, but there isn't really an opening that will get a hand in there.

Is there some kind of trick to this?

Have a good extendable magnet? It would probably take two people.

Re: Installing Mirrors - HOW?

I pulled the backing plates up with about 8 feet of light guage wire through the mounting holes and down to the bottom of the door through a speaker cutout. Then held them in place with studs until I got a screw started through the mirror. I think any access inside the door should work. I didn't have a helper available the day I mounted my mirrors so it took a little while. I have a write up on page 11 post 257 of my WMB thread below for more details and pictures.

Re: Installing Mirrors - HOW?

I pulled the panels, which is easy enough. My son held the mirror while I positioned the plate, and I recall using a piece of duct tape to assist placement. Took a minute or so a mirror. Unless you have huge hands or really short arms, there's ample room through the door to reach that plate.

Re: Installing Mirrors - HOW?

I used a magnet and place the nut on it. Then moved the magnet/nut to the hole from with in. This places it in the area and allows you to thread the screw from the outside. Repeat two more times and you will think it was so easy you will redo it for fun.
