One Ton Suspension Upgrades

I just picked up a 72 Motor Home. Will the crossmember from a 85 one ton bolt up in place of the stock one? I want to change the drivetrain to something that has parts available. Looked at a few sights and no one has rear drums for a dually. Did some searching here and everything that comes up with changing to 4wd from 2wd which is not what I am trying to do.

Thoughts?

Re: One Ton Suspension Upgrades

It will bolt right up without any issues except one hole, the front lower bolt hole on the side of the frame is off just a little. I used a dremel to wollow out the bolt hole so it would line up... don't pay any attention to the gouges on the frame where the dremel went rogue.

Thanks guys,

Picked up a complete front and rear assemblies. Got to see what the gearing is on the 14 bolt.

Great pick 69gmcc10.

Re: One Ton Suspension Upgrades

Couple options as well. You can keep the original front crossmember and run a set of PBFAB control arms, they can be made with 73-91 balljoints, 1" forward and 1" in to allow for better wheel alignment in wheel well and wider wheel/tire. Then you have more brake options too. You can run drop spindles for 73-91 at that point as well.

I'm going to run this with a higher GVW brake spindles from a 84 1ton dually, trying to keep the true 1ton brakes. I'm swapping in a 4.10 14bff and making it disc brakes as well. Might switch to a 3.73 to make the sm465 a little better for top end highway driving.

I'll be running the single wheel 13x3.5" brakes from a 84 Crew Cab 2wd. Additionally I'll be doing a crossmember swap with drop spindles.

Are you putting disks on the back?
