Thought you guys might like to see some of your iron in England and a couple of other toys, 1955 XK140 FHC and 1967 Triumph Vitesse 2.0 litre straight six. I suppose I just like cars. Any help with the tyre mount would be appreciated.

Nice. Not to highjack your thread, but I'm kind of interested in the LPG conversion. Maybe you could explain it in another thread

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

Do you want to mount the spare tire on the bedside, using the depression just behind the cab?
or
Under the rear bed of the truck?

Please let me know and I will see what I have...

Welcome mate...Aussie Bill in NC here...

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

Here is an image of an original mount and a replacement unit that was made locally.

There are also two flat iron pieces that fit inside the bed side the strengthen the side are where the bracket mounts.

Note...This bracket was made for a six bolt pattern wheel...the wheel mount bolt circle set at 9 3/4" o/c to suit the six bolt wheel stud pattern.

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

Thanks all, looking to mount on side of bed as per original. Stud pattern is 5 Stud currently Centreline alloys. Due to 15" x 10" rear rims and 8" front spare will be just a standard rim with matching stud pattern. It will just be more for show than go! I'm in Malvern, Worcestershire, 200 meters from Morgan Motor Company. I'll photograph the hole and fender to give some idea of what I have. I believe last owner passed away 5 years ago, and met first owner and builder yesterday who says it was with truck when he sold it. Truck came to Worcestershire from Arizona in 2006. Apparently running a V6 then but damaged, light rear and frontal. Fuel consumption is of course a concern to some but l think more about " smiles per miles!"

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

Is there any way to confirm exact build date? This truck is first registered 01/01/60. If I can prove a build date before which it obviously was then I can claim MOT , Ministy of Transport annual road test exemption. Saves some money and annual hassle.

If the bench seat is original and hasn't been redone look in the seat springs for a build sheet. It will have all the information about the truck

On the drivers door pillar near the latch area there is a body plate that will have a series of letters and numbers ...post those and there are several folk here that will decipher the details for you...

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

That number looks like a rebuilder number as the format does not meet the normal standard format...something like

C1446S107722

see this link for an explanation...

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cbe/full.aspx?Page=8

On the inside of the glove box lid, is there an SPID label.?

Its usually a large label that lists all the truck build details...

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

Obviously it's been modded quite a bit, lots of labels missing. It was apparently quite knackered when it arrived in uk in 2006. I have just photographed the plate by drivers foot

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

AUssieinNC I just looked at the link to LMC site and the number works if you look under GMC truck info, it suggests a build date of 1960 however it was first registered 01/60 according to US Title and UK DVLA have assigned it as first registered 01/01/60 based on this. My thoughts are it must have been built before this in 1959 otherwise the Pontiac factory made 12695 trucks on 01/01/1960!

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

1001 P N 12956 A translates to

10 ½ ton

01 115” wheel base

P Pontiac plant

N 1960-61

The build number 12956 makes it a 1960 as 1961 started at 26001

A 5,000 lbs GVW

Welcome aboard mate !

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

I thought MOT exemption was automatic for any vehicle more than 40 years old?

As it is 2017, that means any vehicle first registered in 1977 or earlier would be exempt.

Here is North Carolina, anything over 35 years old doesnt need an inspection and anything older than 25 years doesnt need emissions testing...you just pay the registration fee of approx $ 30 USD...

You should be exempt with the build date on this one approx mid April 1960...

Bill

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

The rolling 40 year rule was for RFL exemption (Road Fund Licence) road tax by another name. The annual fee is between £0 and about £1000.00 dependant on emissions. Successive governments failed to implicate it though , I think currently pre 1975 is considered an historic vehicle so no annual RFL. The annual MOT or roadworthiness ( do I win anything for a 14 letter word?) exemption is for pre 01/01/1960 though. In the UK it is a legal requirement to either tax (RFL) your car or declare it as SORN( Statutory of road notification). This can be done online. My truck is £0.00 per year and can be driven in Londons congestion zone for free as has LPG. At 15mpg this does make me chuckle as the squirrels fall from the trees as I pass by.

What engine would the BHP relate to? The truck apparently had a V6 when it came from Arizona.

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

This wiki link will give you the lowdown on the original V6 engine...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMC_V6_engine

These engines are still around over here, but getting scarce now

Have you figured out which small block engine you have in the truck...

Check passengers side ( for this truck, not your English gems!) front of the engine block for a set of stamped numbers ...if the block has been decked a couple of times it may be difficult to read...

Also look at the casting number, drivers side rear of block. That will tell us what core it is...

Smile Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

A very cool conversion for the truck that might make some sense is to put in a 6 cylinder diesel in order to get better mileage, noting the costs of fuel/petrol in the U.K.
The 6 cylinder engines typically found in the Toyota Landcruisers was designed largely around some of the great attributes of the straight 6 GM engine of the 60's....so it is a very easy installation and conversion.
These GM 6 cylinder engines came in a few different sizes...including 230/250 and the big 292 cubic inch sizes (approx 4-5 litre engines)..which is similar in size to the Toyota 6 cylinder diesels.
On the other hand...if mileage is no issue and power is the preferred route...then stick with the small block chevy.
All Good

Re: New pickup owner from England, tyre mount ?

A bit of sad news to impart, someone's earlier fuel spillage on road caused this 5 hours ago! My daughter who is 12 and has Downs Syndrome and I walked away. I have cut to forehead from where my head snapped the rear view mirror off, and injured left thumb but overall nothing serious. My daughter was just shook up. An identical accident happened here 2 days before.
Gutted'!!
