Frame Chopping.... Opps I cut off too Much !

Yepper the Subject say's it all. For some reason the 8"off the back was too much. The rear cross sill has no place to sit (or bolt to) Kinda a warning message.
Watch out.

Fire up the welder an get out the grinder. Mario has an oops to fix. But you weren't supposed to tell us, now you have to let us humiliate you. Like we've never done anything that stupid! Pappy always said: Son, measure once and cut twice. After all, who does what his pappy says?

Something doesn't sound right. I know of three other "cut down" LWB frames and all have had 8 inches cut off the rear of the frame and everything fit great, beds and bumpers. Hmmm...............

I took 8" off the back of my frame too, and it worked perfect. The (new) bumper bolt holes are already drilled in the frame. Put the rear bumper on last weekend and it tucks in to the bed great., about 1/4" gap b/t bumper and bed. I would do some more measuring before any more modifying of frame. Good luck

My cousin wants to shorten his 69 longbed, and we laid underneath my 70 and measured my short frame and his long. You need to do just what they did in the article in CCT. 12" out of the center and 8" off the very back of the frame is the difference between our trucks. Hope that helps.

Yep it was me, I removed 6 inches. I was going off an old Truckin' mag article and it said to take 12 from under cab and 6 inches off the rear frame. I used the holes that were already in the frame and bumper bolted right up perfectly. If I had cut off any more there would not have been any room to bolt the back of the bed to?

I am wondering why some trucks need 6 and some need 8?

i dont know if it has anything to do with it, but my blazer and dads burb both have a rounded part on the back of the frame where the bumper bolts up to and my truck is flat on the back and has brackets that the bumper mounts to... i'm not sure if any trucks are done like the blazer/burb but taht could account for a few inches...

-just my thoughts...i dunno

Thanks For the repelys.

Gene,

I think if I weld 2 " more on the back that will be enough. I saved the old piece for some reason........ and I have no Idea why. I will put the box on and see how much I actually need and go from there. I guess I should get the bumper and brackets soon or before I start to weld or cut anything else off. My truck is also a leaf sprung truck soo mabye that had somthing to make the measurements diffirent that the others.

I am not mad at the fact that I cut too much off. I just did what was described I also checked with some other sources, checked again then started cutting. No worrys.

Later Dudes.
