A little progress. Laid the front carpet in to check the fit, make sure it’s high hump, it’s fine. Turns out the front carpet for a suburban is the same as a truck, they send it without trimming the back half of it, so when I trim it I will have enough carpet for a full width molded rear mat. It will just need the front edge bound, I bought a upholstery sewing machine a couple years ago, I haven’t really used it much, it will easily do the job.

I’m a little concerned the red carpet is a bit maroonish, tomorrow I will find my red seatbelts and see how they look, the belts are true red.

The garage has doors all over the place. Working both sides of 4 doors is a lot of work. I sandblasted the lower inside, hinge area and lower outside of the doors, there pretty solid. The black is epoxy primer, most of the dents and dings on the inner side of the doors are filled, they need high build and blocking.

Here is a picture of the mass loaded vinyl, the ups guy was floored about how heavy it was. Bought off amazon, they delivered it free, (prime member), it was sent from the Midwest 2nd day air, over 100 pounds, someone had to have lost money on the sale. I installed one piece on the upper inside cowl, cuts real easy, tears if scored but not when pulled. I hope it works to kill the sound transmission. Borrowed a heat gun from a friend tonight so tomorrow I will see if it can be heat molded.
The spray adhesive shown in the picture is super nice, comes out in a stringy 2” fan pattern with no overspray.

The 4th door got a coat of filler today and they all got high build primer.
The primer revealed 2 cracks in the passenger door upper hinge pocket, that was a good find as those cracks can cause mysterious door alignment and latching issues.

Hey Randy, since you have now worked with the MLV, how do you think it will mold and fit to the contours of the floor? The white on red is just gonna be sharp!

I don’t think it’s very moldable, tomorrow I will know though, I’m laying the MLV on the firewall and front floor for sure.
I borrowed a heat gun to see if that helps. I think I’m going to have to layer it, overlapping sections. It glues together really good in my test lap joint, very difficult to rip apart the joint.

I’m making paper templates as shown in the pic for each section.

I got these hollow hole punches that can be used on a drill to make holes in the MLV, it turns out they work great on the Dynamat and carpet.
I always have a hard time with making holes in the carpet for the seats and shifter boots, using one on the drill makes a real clean hole.
I also sharpened up a filet knife to cut the shifter holes in the carpet and that worked much better than a razor blade.
My filet knife hangs off my tool cart from when I used to part out trucks, I used to use it to cut belts and heater and radiator hoses. I saw workers on YouTube trimming the edges of molded carpet using long knifes so it made me think of my filet knife,

That's a Juki DNU-1541 ,I've had mine for 20 years and they work great . Commercial walking foot sewing machines hold all their value and will sew thru a 1/4" wood ruler so keep your digits out of the way . A while back I got this one for a back up a Consew 206-rb-5 from a guy who thought he was going to sew up his own interior and then found out how hard it is to learn how to sew custom seats . Get some scrap material and practice going as slow as possible to learn control by feathering the pedal just like you would starting a truck. Once you get it down hide it under a tarp and don't tell anybody or you'll soon find out how many friends you have that come with their own projects .

Good idea about the hole punches in the drill.
Using the paper temples and cutting the MLV
in sections will help with the carpet
to still lay against the contours of the floor.

Hey grump,
I did a lot of research before I bought it and felt the Juki was the best available for the price. I have a 72 Dodge Dart that needs the drivers side cloth repaired, the repro cover for it is $750 so I bought the machine to do that job and the material from SMS. I have a boat that needs new interior too. The machine has a variable speed motor so it’s relatively easy to use. I have tightened up some listing wire pockets on bucket seat covers and hemmed a bunch of pants with it too. I also bought some off the shelf patio furniture cushions and recut and sewed them for a custom fit. I learned that Sewing is a trade and or art like anything else is.

It will last a long time Mine is 20 + years old and never needed any type of repairs after sewing thousands of miles , It takes a lot of sewing /building seat covers to wear off the powder coating.

Beautiful seat. I will never even get close to wearing it out but it is handy, just remembered I fixed a 3’ tear in my boat cover too, so it has been useful and will pay for itself. I’m sure you have an upholstery steamer, I have one on the way and am excited to see the results on my carpet and seat install in this truck.

Steamers work great but just don't ever use one on any seats with the heat pressed design in them or on any real leather . The heat pressing will separate and look bad . the leather will cook and become hard / crack .

I got the firewall and front floor covered with the MLV, it is moldable with heat. It seems to absorb a lot of heat though and sometimes when forming it will tear so you have to go slow.
