Prepping for a welder, some questions please
I have a spot in the frame requiring a weld before I kick it off for powder coat and start this build already. I'd like to quiz the board encyclopedia on some other things I believe call for a weld. My questions are in captions within the images. I'm basically asking can it be done, is it difficult or would you do differently. Thanks for any input.

Radiator support---Cut a plug, weld it in,then drill the size hole you want.
Rear dif---Clean it real good, then seal it with silicone. Axle tube---That looks like rust scale, clean it all off. Mike. |

Not sure on the sheet metal gauge for the core support. Perhaps the weld guy can help. Silicon huh? I may have to do that twice, once for blast, another after powder coat. Thanks a bunch.

For the hole in the radiator support you can use a welding spoon. It is just a sheet of copper with a medal handle that you back the hole with while you weld it shut.

Re: Prepping for a welder, some questions please
The welding spoon idea sounds fairly simple.
I looked up some info. about the leaks in the axle. Apparently those are called plug welds, and it's a process to apply those welds. For one reason they're two different metals, cast iron housing with steel tubes.

Re: Prepping for a welder, some questions please
You've got two plug welds leaking oil and a fair amount of rust. You may want to take that to an axle shop and see if they think the axle tube may be moving around in the cast center section.

Yeah Richard, you're probably right. I've read read up on the leaks and such, there may have been some shifting. I was contemplating having them install bearings and seals anyway, may as well do it up. It's only money
