Insurance Question

I have always wanted to build one of these big trucks and I have my eye on a C60 that a guy is selling. Question I have is, am I going to have to have some type of commercial insurance for this truck because of the GRVW ratings? The truck will be for personal not commercial use. I can call around to some insurance companies but was wondering what everyone else has.

It did originally have air brakes but I want to use a late model 1 ton chassis with a pickup bed and it will be converted to hydroboost brakes. Essentially I am just interested in the cab but if I have to get a CDL and carry commercial insurance, I will definitely rethink this project.

Re: Insurance Question

My 1961 GMC 5000 has a GVW of 24,000. Registered commercial through Commerce Insurance, insurance for the year is about $480-$500. I don't have physical damage coverage because I'll just fix it myself if it gets hit, that knocked the price down quite a bit.

What year is that C60? More than likely mine is so cheep due to the age... If I registered as either an antique or personal use cost would have been around $200 less.

If you're only going to slap the C60 sheet metal onto a 1-ton, you really shouldn't have an issue. The truck can be registered at a lower GVW if you won't be hauling stuff. Mines tagged for 20,000 since I don't haul much....

Re: Insurance Question

I'm in SC and I have a 1970 C60 rated at 24k with hydraulic brakes. I had to get commercial insurance through state farm, where I have all my other insurance. I pay right at $300 every 6 months. Because of its weight rating, they would only insure it commercial.
