what years and type of vehicles are the best to get a tilt column preferably with cruise control on it to put in a 69 chevy truck ?

I have to bump this because this is a good question, I'd like to know as well. I installed 2004 silverado seats in my 70, and now I'm right up on the wheel. I was going to pick up something like an ididit column. They said they can make me one with a custom length so I don't feel so cramped. I have a TBI conversion so I'd like to get the cruise control working with a cool little handle like the factory installed unit. Ididit offers a cruise control upgrade, but I'm still on the fence. I do have an aftermarket cruise control unit I bought for another project but it's the little box on the dash style switch, and that just ain't cool.

The aftermarket columns can build you what ever you want. I was thinking the other direction and getting the column with the key in it. I don't like it on the dash, no security what-so-ever. Other than aftermarket I can't think of any column that is tilt, without the key, that will fit other than the factory tilt columns (good luck finding one of those).

I hate to answer this one this way but there is a TON on this if you use the search feature. The short answer is chevy vans up to early 80s, 70s-80s gm based motorhomes and boxtrucks, , aftermarket(ididit, etc.) and probably some full size gm cars. The cruise is added onto the directional lever and looks period correct for the most part on the van and motorhome columns.

Check out Flame River Columns through Summit Racing. Cost less than Ididit and are everybit as nice. Easy to install and can get them any way you desire.
Now for the hard part for you guys that are looking at them saying they can custom length for you. Keep in mind there is only so short you can go and with a tilt column, you wont get to go much shorter than OEM. You are limited to how short you can go due to bolt placement and the hub housing of the column in relation to the dash. I literally have less than an inch after installing mine.

i used a van tilt. i think 80 or 81 was the last with no lock on the colume. i also moved the neutral safty switch and moved it a few inches closer to the dash. this is one of the best mods i have ever seen in these trucks, other than brakes and power stearing

What all is involved in moving the nss on the column? Any welding required?

Go through Summit Racing......look at the Flame River Aluminum column. You can get it in regular steel (black and needs painted) brushed aluminum, polished aluminum, and chromed steel.
You guys that are trying to get one shorter in length, if you order for a 1972 model you get it as short as you will get it. Sure, they will make you one as short as you want, however with a tilt column having a longer collar, you will still be sitting close no matter what.
Here is what it looks like with the Flame River Polished aluminum with a Grant Signature Series adapter and steering wheel.

i pulled this floor shift tilt colum from a rv (more or less a chev van with a rv body) it had a auto shifter on the dash an it had a cc knob that was set screwed onto a cut turn signal handle this colum is 4" shorter than a standard colum really sucked the streering wheel towards the dash you can find it somewhere here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=537698 in my kids truck
best thing about it was the $20 price tag

i don't belive i did any welding to move the switch. it did involve some drilling, and cutting a couple layers of the tube with a dremal type tool. mine also required an adapter harnes from a flat plug to a curved one that you can get at any GM dealer. i found the recipe for theswap right here on this sight probably 7 years ago. do a search for van tilt or neutral safty switch relocation. Just remember as the wheel moves closer to the dash it also gets closer to the seat so a tilt and a smaller wheel both become nessasary. hear are some pics of mine now. i lost the pics of the prosses

So did you shave the key location on the S-10 column like mine or did you keep the column key start? I didn't see any pictures of the passenger side of the column.

its shaved . the rods that went from the ignition key to the ignition switch would have been trapped between the column and the dash anyways. i would have liked to keep the high beam switch but that was also run by rods

not trying to jack a thread, but who did your center console , i am looking for something like that , maybe with a little more room for a pair of 6x9 speakers on the sides

If you are looking for an aftermarket column, there is a member of this forum who sells the flaming river tilt column at a cheaper price than youll find anywhere else.
I bought one from him-----havent got it installed yet----but am very happy with the column and the price.

By the way----It is a flaming river unit--MADE for our trucks!! Do a search in the forum for flaming river and youll find the thread Im sure.

I dont think it will violate any rules if I tell you his board name----its PICKMUP----check with him.
