Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

Update, I got the engine painted and it turned out pretty good, sorry for the crappy pic. However I may have to replace the driver side factory cylinder head due to the front exhaust manifold bolt had broken off and we were unsuccessful in extracting it. Not sure if it would cause an exhaust leak or not. My buddy and I basically filled and grinded it down smooth. I am prepared to purchase a factory head however we are planning on trying to heli coil it. Be aware that the exhaust manifolds have been prone to breaking either flush with the cylinder head or it will leave more bolt like a stud. I guess things were running to smooth.

Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

Trevino, whats up? This is Tommy out of Waco. I bought the two saddle tanks from you about 5 months ago. Anyways, your truck looks good and you are making excellent progress. Looks like you will be the envy of town once you are finished. I remember, the last time we talked, you were planning on moving forward with your TBI motor. I see plans have changed. My two cents... Excellent choice on the LS1. I have put one in a four door swb squarebody and you cant beat them.

Can't tell for sure from this last pic you posted but did you paint the aluminum heads or just polish them up??

It's looking good!

Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

if you cant get a bolt in there it will not work and will leak like crazy. go ahead and find another one and get a new gasket kit.

Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

Puglia10 - yeah I noticed I had one broke on my suburban, the bad part is that on my motor is that i had none sticking out the head or I would have used vise grips, mine was a little beneath the bolt hole and i used the incorrect size extractor and some of broke off, sucks but what the hell.

Cable666guy - yeah there is a lot of peer pressure on this site, thanks for the compliments

JJAB - thanks for the compliments boss

Gordonr1973 - Thanks for compliments chief; no just did scotch brite on the front of them, trust me they coul look better.

americanmuscle - Yeah I know, we are going to attempt to weld a stud there to see if it will hold up to the strength we need if not I got a contact who has some GM overstock brand new 243 casting heads which from what i have researched are the same as 799 casting and they are the ls6 heads or something like that. They are an upgrade to what I have so it is what it is. This puts me back 30 days because the money i had saved were for the dirty dingo adapter mounts and schoenfeld ls truck headers. living and learning the hard way.

Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

so the ls6 heads will work with the stock intake and fuel rail from your motor?

yes they will. all cathedral port intakes work with all cathedral port heads. if you can spring for an ls6 intake to go with the heads its worth a few ponies up top, the stock truck intake is good for low end though.

check ebay for a set of heads. they will be listed as ls6 or ls2 heads and you can find rebuilt heads for pretty good prices on there. any 243 or 799 casting will be just fine.

Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

justpball- thanks boss, hopefully I cn be close to your level one of these days.lol

Update - I found a better deal on some stock truck 5.3 heads thru a buddy and I should have them next week which will save me quite a bit. I will have to buy a Fel Pro gasket kit. Hopefully I can order up the Dirty Dingo adapter plates on Monday. The Schoenfeld headers will have to wait till after Christmas. Anyways today I picked up my alternator case from my powder coater and had it put back together. I also put the power steering pump back in the resevoir. So here is a pic, not much but enjoy. Me and a buddy also removed the heads today, just waiting to get the other ones next week and get back on track. One more thing I just painted the water pump (silver) tonight, I will paint the pulley (gloss black) tomorrow and post a pic. The p/s pump looks dull in the pic but it's the lighting they both look the same in person. the p/s pulley is powder coated gloss black as well.

Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

Update - I finished painting the water pump and pulley and it came out pretty good, I got a little off on the taping but I think it looks okay. The crank pulley is also gloss black. I will probably do the idler & tensioner pulleys tomorrow. Been ripping and running all day long. Not much but enjoy. The plan is to run the kwikperf a/c relocation kit. I am about to browse summitracing for different style of sanden compressors in polished.

Re: My '87 SWB Project w/pics!!

Good evening gents; not much to report, I should have my heads next week and probably will put them on Christmas Eve. However I did paint the tranny and the tensioner pulley. I probably went a little overboard and should have painted the entire tranny silver but I did the tailshaft in gloss black. If I had a money tree I probably wouldn't have so much time on my hands.lol Don't laugh!! Enjoy!!
