Buttercup '66

Well I've been on here for awhile and am doing a build thread in somewhat of the wrong order..... I bought this truck back in March from a local fella.... that truck had been in his possession for about 5 years and other than tossing in a "350" (actually a 305) he really didnt do anything to it he supposedly bought it off the original owner here in Kannapolis NC where the truck has been for its entirety (granted this came from the same guy who told me it was a "crate 350") .... over the next few days im going to be posting and updating on everything ive done to it so far...Including alot of "how to" sort of things for anyone just getting there hands dirty for the first time on one of these trucks.. its come a LONG way since I brought it home..... but atleast I now feel that its mine.... This has been an interesting build so far. A few things that help.... well having the fella that started this site live two houses away has helped alot.... Ive been a drag racer for years... for me it was always about going fast... but I wanted this to be my cruiser... and it is just that. So first let me say thanks to Josh for all of his help and insight..... theres alot of other fellas im going to thank before this is over..... but stay tuned for that!

Re: Buttercup '66

So after I got the truck the first thing that had to be done was address the floor.... not rotten.... But.... the shag carpeting that someone put in it had to be done away with..... So after ripping and grinding I mixed up a special batch of tractor paint to spray the floor with.... The tractor enamels work well just because its thick and durable... atleast in my opinion anyway....

Re: Buttercup '66

At this point I just drove it.... just about everyday for a couple months. Learning the truck and its problems.... The 305 ran great but I do like a pretty engine compartment so I started working on a plan for exactly wanted to do to it.... Im a planner.... so I made a few lists....

That's a nice solid looking cruiser. And here I thought I was the only one on the board running RWL's on Ralley's

Looking forward to more updates

Re: Buttercup '66

Ok so lets continue..... At this point The "350" I felt was just a serious dog and the under hood appearance was seriously dated in a bad way..... SO I decided to yank the motor and give it a fresh coat of paint and find a few correct pieces for it to make it look like it belonged

Re: Buttercup '66

This is when I found it was actually a 305... .the big 5.0 stamped on the block was a giveaway. So I had a spare 350 under the work bench.... so I decided to build the 350 but make it look like an old 283/327. I also wanted to address the Location of the alternator why I was at it. Wanting to make this look as "stock" as possible. Now granted I know the motors were a Greenish grey color.... but Im a chevy orange guy. I ended up finding a 66 impala 4 barrel intake, chevy valve covers and an original air cleaner from the autofair. Then I dug around on craigslist and found a set of 1966 327 heads (1.94 valves) off of an impala.

Re: Buttercup '66

This is where my buddy Ben comes into play to work his magic..... Ben is a professional engine builder for a engine shop in Concord..... He built the motor in my Malibu that runs awesome. So I asked him to work over the heads and toss it all together. He did a simple valve job and put hardened seats in the 44 year old heads. We decided to go ahead and toss all new valves in them to. Then we tossed it on the dyno to break in the new cam and get a few power numbers. The final numbers were 304hp and 374tq.... awesome for a driver!!
I almost forgot... I did have to dig up pulleys and brackets from an original donor.... Richards auto salvage in Denton NC had everything I needed.

Re: Buttercup '66

So then I drove it for about a week before I decided It needed a serious drop.... and maybe a brake update (this was all in the plan from the beginning). I did some trading around for some wheels.... I traded my rallys for some factory steel wheels and wrapped some new rubber around them. Then I found a set of 56 Chevy 210 dog dishes at the autofair.... a little bit of elbow grease and a little one shot and the look perfect!! You'll see them in a little while.

Re: Buttercup '66

So this is at the point to where I decided on the drop. I wanted to go low but didnt want to do an air ride setup. So a static drop is what I decided on. Before I knew it I was on the phone to Jeff from CPP. I opted for a 5.5/7 drop to give Buttercup the stance that I wanted. Jeff was a great help.... we figured that there rear kit minus the tubular trailing arms would be the ticket. I ordered everything in two stages. The rear first... then while I was working on that I could figure out what I wanted to do with the front and the brakes.
