Calling all Junkyard Crawlers

Anyone know where I can find old school buses for parts, specifically the kind with C-50 style front ends? I am tryintg to find the gauges out of one of these. Out here in Cali, there's not too many hanging out at the yards anymore. Let me know what you find!

Re: Calling all Junkyard Crawlers

I called, but they didn't seem to have very much old stuff.

I know I see 'em all the time on American Pickers, so someone should know where a few are sitting... I hope.

I might know where one is here, I'll try to get down that way next week and check it out. Going to Cincinnati this weekend for Midwest Willys Reunion. I'll get back with you.

That would be awesome if you could Rob!

I have a sister that lives in Kentucky, she is in Berea, I think?

Anyways, let me know what you find!

Re: Calling all Junkyard Crawlers

Shame you're not in Georgia. I know I've passed yards in various places around the state that seemed to be nothing but old school buses. That said, I don't know that there are any buses in the yards immediately around Athens but I may be heading out to one this weekend. I'll let you know if I make it out there and find something useful.

I know. Seems like all the cool stuff is not where I am, unless you like river hippies, granola, and politicians.

Re: Calling all Junkyard Crawlers

I can't find any pics anywhere... so I will describe it: Large speedometer with a plastic(?) bezel that is inset into a metal panel, also a quad gauge that is the same size. Orange needles, black face. Would like to get gauges, and if possible, the panel they are in. Will try to get a pic if I can.

Yeah, those kinda look like them. I was thinking they were bigger than 4 3/4", but I also need the panel they go in.

Soon2Blaze, and anyone else who cares, those gauges can be found in any junkyard... they are in early 70's vans. And, I'm about 99% sure they will fit in the center hole of a standard truck bezel with some slight modification. All you would have to do is turn the stock fuel gauge into a tach to have full instrumentation.

I have one of those setups already I got from an old bus last week. The gauges I am looking for looks like that except jumbo size.

Re: Calling all Junkyard Crawlers

Look for Grumman vans as well, I just parted one out last week, I know the gauges were still in it. If anyones interested I can post pics of it. Most Grummans were built on the 67-91 style chassis up until '95 or '96, they used all Chevy drivetrain/frame/rads etc. Good luck.

Re: Calling all Junkyard Crawlers

Pretty sure the 1954 and 1955 1st series Chevy and Gmc's have the same gauges as what you're looking for. I've never seen the '54-'55 gauges in person, but the pics that I've seen look exactly like the '67-'79 (maybe even later) school bus gauges-- and those I have seen in person... hundreds of them. My family has been in the bus business since 1954.
