Re: 3 Speed Overdrive

Thanks for the responses. Now I have another question. Is the linkage available for the 4 bolt that works on a 72?
This may sound odd but I kinda want the non sincro first. i had plenty of them plus I've driven tractor trailer for 40 years. One non sincro gear is a breeze.

Yes, I'm about ready to pull the old motor/tranny. Was hoping to get it done this weekend, but some things have come up, so might be a week or two.

Re: 3 Speed Overdrive

Don't worry about the time. Just happy to know you have the linkage. It's gonna be awhile till I can install everything anyway. I just wanted to let you know what was up. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. Thanks, Jeff

Hello 57Suburb. Hope you had a great Christmas. Just wondering if you had a chance to do anything about that linkage for the 4 bolt Muncie 319? Thanks, Jeff

Did you get a bellhousing too?
Bearing retainer is bigger on a non synchro trans.

In San Antonio right now for a bowl game. Hoping to get something done when I get back.

I did not get the bell housing. Didn't realize I needed it. The guy I bought the transmission from has one. Is the throw out bearing fork different? Thanks!

Not a problem. I just wanted to know if I needed to start looking somewhere else. Thanks!

It’s the transmission bearing retainer that’s a different size.
The older trans has one that is about 5 1/8 inches in diameter.
Your present tranny likely has one that is about 4 7/8 inches.
The bearing retainer fits snugly into the big hole in the bell housing.
Easy to measure the o/d tranny.
You might need the other bell housing.

Re: 3 Speed Overdrive

Another thought!
The other bellhousing might not work with your present flywheel/clutch assembly.
There’s big and small ones.
Something else to keep in mind.

Re: 3 Speed Overdrive

The 4 bolt 3 speed was produced with both sizes of input retainer. No problem if yours is not a match for your bellhousing, used replacement should be an easy locate. Both are very common. Your '72 should have the larger diameter bellhousing input retainer hole and likely your 3 speed OD will have the smaller dia. input retainer. Another option is Novak or Advance Adaptor sells a simple sleeve to make up the difference.

Thanks Steve. I'm in Fort Collins right now. When I get home I'll measure the overdrive transmission. The guy that I bought it from has the bell housing along with the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. It was supposed to come with the tranny but I didn't think I would need it so I figured I would save on shipping by not taking it. I just texted him and he still has everything.
By the way, nice state you got here.
