Re: Any info on caprice cop car transmissions?

I rebuilt dozen and dozens of those since our Chevrolet dealer had a relationship with Houston Police department. Nothing special about the transmission although they did have a software upgrade to keep the 2 gear band from tearing up.

Re: Any info on caprice cop car transmissions?

The 94-96 4L60E 9C1 cars had a mechanical lockout added on to the side of the trans to prevent the lever pulling down to 1. That's it. Nothing different about the actual trans.

If you have other questions, lmk. I've owned a 9C1, many Caprice and Roadmaster wagons, and still have my 96 SS that I've owned for years.

I don't know if this helps in any way, but the engine braking on my '95 Z28 is pretty effective. It's got the LT1 and 4L60E, and as far as I know it's all stock.

You can make it even stronger by playing with the DFCO tables in the PCM programming, especially with B or D body programming vs F body (deceleration fuel cut off).

Re: Any info on caprice cop car transmissions?

I don't understand the question exactly?? Like already stated.....9C1 cars had manual Lo locked out via a tab on the manual shift shaft lever, If you ever threw a 700R4/4L60E in Lo at speed.....You know why GM did that!!!

Is this a 700R4/4L60 or a 4L60E? The Overrun clutch operation is different between the 2, Though the 4L60E can be modified to make the Overruns to come on in D3 like a 700R4.

700R4/4L60E's don't make good autocross units especially if the 3-4 clutch is going to be cycled a lot.

Re: Any info on caprice cop car transmissions?

My understanding was the late model caprice, like 2011 and up had a pursuit mode when chasing bad guys. It was like having a 5 speed in 1st gear when you let off the gas, sorta pull you off the dash deacelerate. I think it did it in 2nd gear also.I dont know what trans that would be in cop cars,4L60,4L80,I dont know. Thanks!

Re: Any info on caprice cop car transmissions?

From memory, and it s a little foggy some days...GM delivered these Police package vehicles with what they termed "sport shift calibrations" for performance driving....

The trans is a 6L80e....

The 6L80E transmission is prone to issues that include: 2-3 harsh or delayed shifts, harsh or delayed shifts from park or reverse, burnt 1-2-3-4, or 3-5 reverse clutch, check engine light (DTC P0751 Code), converter shudder due to flaking of the converter lining, shudder on low/reverse apply, TEHCM and/or CAN software malfunction.

If it was my truck destined for autocross, I would not be looking at using this series of trans...yes, you could make it work...but that Blair Witch project trans cost $4k for a reason....

Others can chime in...this is my humble opinion only...
