Build Thread-Project 1 color

Well I'm deep into it.
This was a multi colored truck. (hood yellow, drivers door rusty, pass fender gray, top of cab red, 1 moulding on pass door, white bed and driverside fender, big @$$ rusty work bumper.)
This was driving my wife crazy and was an embarassment for my kids.
The neighbors didn't like it parked on "their" street.

So I'm not going for a show truck, but more like a one color paint job and new components. Also changing from a straight six 3spd combo to a v8 th350 combo. If time permits I'd like to shorten the frame and maybe use a 67-68 front clip.

First I removed the bed;

Now time to start the front clip removal.

Wish me luck!
Dano

The 2007 truck is now my temporary daily driver.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

Just because the neighbors don't like it, hasn't stopped me from parking it on the street

One of the neighbor ladies kept calling the police to tow away the "abandoned truck" on her street.

Here in the south dano we just invite our buddies over for a B-B-Q and set up lawn chairs and spittoons on the front yard.No one can have more than on strap of they're overalls connected, and coon dogs is welcome. After a couple of those kind of parties the neighbors seem to think ol'trucks ain't so bad.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

I just finished a truck for a customer, so now I'm back to my truck.
The 250 engine and 3-spd tranny are out and gone to a fellow board member.
Front clip has also been removed.
Here's some pics.

It might not seem like much, but I know every step forward counts.
Next is cleaning the garage, and getting all of the body/bed parts out of the garage, then I'll start removing everthing inside and outside of the cab.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

my neighbors leave me alone..after the last truck i had that had 14 inch cherry bombs warming up at 4am every moening to go to work,,even though i didnt need to leave that early,,they stopped complaining..then the thing to complain about was the lawn clippings in my truck from my bussiness..when they mentioned the,,i told them i could put a 4 foot box on it and leave them in there all summer..thank god they didnt make me do that..about 3 weeks is all i stand,,before the truck smeels to bad for me to be in it..lol
but anyway you making progress,,looks like you might need to clear out some more space so you can walk around it...

Yeah, I don't know what it is about my garage but everything gets thrown in there. The back of the truck has a bunch of stuff on the rear frame that I have to also get rid of. Thanx for the support.

It seems you have one of the problems I have every time I do something with the truck more stuff un related to my truck appears in my garage. It multiplies. I spend more time cleaning to work than working.
good luck with it

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

This project was going nowhere fast, I didn't have a clear vision for the project. I have been angonizing whether to do a frame up resto, with a frame shorten and a 67/68 front clip, but the wife needs the garage back so I'm just going for getting the truck 1-color.
I already have a 70 swb so I'm going to keep her a lwb. I decided to keep the 69 front clip. Now I feel back on track and hope to post some progress soon, like tonite. Gonna grab some brewski's head out into the garage even though it's 100+ degrees outside, gonna get something done.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

Well it was about 107 degrees when I started and now it is 94 degrees. I did manage to strip out the inside of the cab.

Took out the seat and gas tank. The PO had a camper so I have to take out about 30+ snaps from the boot around the back cab window.

Took out the gauge cluster, headlight, wiper switch, heater control, ash tray, radio delete, wiring harnesses/fuse box etc.

And I decided to stop for the night after scraping out the tarpad stuff on the floor of the truck when I discovered small rust through holes by the passenger kick panel. This is California cab rust damage! The horrror!

Tomorrow night want to get a new set of springs on the truck, front and rear.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

Got new stock height springs installed on Saturday night (9/1/2007), man I must've lost 5 lbs in water weight. I couldn't get them to sit right, but I learned to fasten the top of the spring first then fasten the spring bottoms second. On Tuesday I'm gonna order new rear tracking bar bushings and panhard bar bushings. While I wait for them I'll install the new front springs. Then hopefully shocks, then I'll wheel the frame out and give it a good washing.

Plus after looking at the horrible phone pics, I'll be using a digital camera for the rest of the thread.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

I was wondering how long it would take someone to say something about my rust. Actually as I was doing some investigation, it looks like both inner and outer rockers and kick panels will need some rust repair. I have to start stripping off the paint to see the extent of the rust damage. The cab corners look OK, so I'm lucky there.
Dano

I also got my trac bar bushings and rear trailing arm bushings in the mail, so this weekend I might try to get out in the garage.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

FLASH FORWARD: Time flies when you have 4 kids, a great wife, and a good dog. I had to take time off this project because of our baby, but I'm finally getting back to this project since the baby is now a little girl.

Had some work done on the cab by David Welch from Mobile Hot Rod Repair
He came by the house, and got all of this done.

Drive-side rocker; (replaced)

Passenger-side rocker; (replaced)

Driver-side kickpanel/floor; (Bottom of rusted out kick panel and rusted floor section replaced.)

Passenger-side kick panel/floor; (Bottom of rusted out kick panel and rusted floor section replaced.)

Driver-side door; (Mirror holes and trim holes welded up.)

Passenger-side door; (Mirror holes and trim holes welded up.)

Back window frame; (Snap-button camper-boot holes welded up.)

Back window frame; (Snap-button camper-boot holes welded up.)

A big thanx to Dave for his work on my cab. I gotta get this project done!

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

I was lucky! The inner rockers weren't too bad. The old rockers themselves weren't too bad, but you never know until you remove them. The old rocker on the driver-side had a rusted out weatherstrip flange and the passenger-side rocker was dented up pretty bad. Check out the vid, it shows part of the work.
Dano

NOTE: The hinges were later rebuilt and the doors hung to check the fit of the rockers.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

The po had put a 68 gmc cab on this 69 c-10. I bought a donor cab that I'm using the good parts for patch panels. In the previous pics you will notice the truck had a white passenger door, but this door has rust issues. The brown door came from the donor cab.

The next part of the cab work will be to change the A/C cab holes in the firewall to non A/C holes, using my donor cab;

Then, to graft the part of the firewall for the e-brake from my donor cab to this cab. The po had removed the hand e-brake and installed a foot e-brake.

Hope to get this done by the beginning of December.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

I'm kinda regretting giving my (L-6/3 speed man tran) away.
3 yrs ago I wanted to put in a (350 V-8 / th-350), but now I wish I had my (L-6/3 spd combo) back.
Oh well, I'm going to start stripping down this V-8 and I need to pull the th-350 out of storage, and get ready to send them off to be rebuilt.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

Not too much done today;

Front springs installed

New steering box, p-arm and rag joint.

Really didn't want to do a frame off, but the perfectionist in me wants to pull, clean and paint the suspension. I know if I do that then I'll want to clean and paint the frame. I have to resist the urge since the goal is 1 color with new components.

Re: Build Thread-Project 1 color

Since I couldn't sell the rolling chassis I decided to take it apart. My old man always tells me "I have more time than money" and that it should not stop me from doing other things on the project. Today I removed the steering wheel and dropped the front suspension from the frame just because.
