Where to begin?

My 71 has a new 190 hp crate, aluminum intake, Holley 600, all new. It acts like it loads up from red light to red light after a 10 mile drive. Once it is cleared out, it runs great. Only does it when it is up to temp. Is the 600 too much carb for this engine? I have not had time to check floats or anything. Any ideas?

Re: Where to begin?

The 600 shouldn't be too much. I have the same engine and intake on my new crate with an Edelbrock carb and it runs prefect. You need to make some adjustments to your carb... Probably the choke...

Re: Where to begin?

600cfm is not to much..check your choke setting if it is an electric choke...may have to adjust dial so it comes off sooner(if electric)...first check floats. If you have a manual choke with cable make sure it is not hanging up when you push back in that is its not opening 100%...all these checks do not cost $$...also make sure you are not missing any vacuum port plugs in any unused ports...........another thought before doing anything check your air cleaner base,i have seen already when changing applications where it could be tight against carb levers/choke area and causing blade not to be able to relax into full open.

Re: Where to begin?

assuming all is new , after it gets hot check for vacuum leaks , and that choke is opening

Re: Where to begin?

I did not think the 600 was too much either. It is manual choke with no cable yet. The air cleaner came with the carb when I bought it, but I will double check to make sure it is not hitting anywhere. I am thinking choke also, just wanting to hear other opinions before I dive into it. Thanks for the input.

Re: Where to begin?

Maybe ((not having the cable hooked up)) is the culprit.Blade is floating around possibly partially closing at times. If you do not have a cable yet try wiring choke open so it can't move and choke out motor.Warm it up first before wiring full open.Maybe this was partially closed enough that it worked fine when cold and when everything was up to temperature it acted up.........ps you may have checked all this out already...just speaking from past experience....Rob

Re: Where to begin?

I've had and still have Holley carbs with manual chokes and never once have they closed on there own. I'd check your float level on the front and back.

Re: Where to begin?

Choke was not the problem. Actually locks open. I hope to check the floats tomorrow, hay baler gets attention first.
