SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

I've had the '95 K2500 Suburban for three years now. I bought to get me by. Cool enough just being older, but never intended to do much coolness on it. It needed some exhaust work so I had dual pipes ran out from a Flowmaster. I haul my tools so I had the glass privacy tinted, and I'm running 285/75-16s on 7" Accurides with the torsion bars cranked up.

So it has gotten me by for three years and I don't seem to be getting ahead enough to be considering buying a truck. The Suburban is actually a good truck for my needs...but for one thing. I need to haul ladders and this one doesn't even have the factory rack. Because of ups and downs with engine troubles I've been up and down about keeping it, so been putting off building a rack. What I want is to build it to look like an expedition rack. I'm thinking now to stay with the 'Burb and build the rack. And that is what takes me to the SAS.

This thing has been a love/hate thing. I bought this thing from Georgia so it has very clean metal. It will take quite a few more winters. If I build the rack I am committed so, as with every vehicle I look at long enough, I have a vision I want to carry out. Theme with this 'Burb has been "truckify" with the base level trim, factory towing mirrors, my use, and going retro with steelies and hubcaps rather than sporty wheels. Now comes the expedition rack and it's time to move over to the cool side with my expedition looking work truck. I think the 88-98s look great with 4" of lift. Make them sit like a stock traditional 4wd. That's all the height I want, but for all that money into "spacing" the stock IFS that is ready for ball joints, etc. I am wanting to do the SAS swap I had always wanted to do on the '92...since before I ever saw any done. I have 285/75-16s on there now and they are stuffed n there. With 4" of lift those would still look right.

I'll be using a GM axle. Not sure how cool I want to go at this point. I have a Dana60 that is 4.10 ratio (also have the full floater 14-bolt). Right now a friend has a 10/14-bolt set with 3.42s I'm thinking about. This is my work truck that I need to travel all over in. I seem to run up and down the interstate for most work. I have late NP205 to put behind the 4L80E.

So, who has done this swap with any pointers to add? ORD says their kit has 3" lift built in. I think that's good for me. I think it will be subtle but noticeable. I can always get more height, but I don't want a jacked-up look, 2" springs maybe. Then I will also do crossover steering.

If I do this I'll end up with a custom creation that nets a far better equipped 4wd that won't be real obvious to tell for most built for daily use. More of a second take vehicle and then nothing shiny or custom added. To top it off I'd like to put an LS in front of that 4L80E.

Here is the 'Burb with 255/85s

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

I've not done the swap but would love to. I have a a 98 burb & a 99 Yukon both near 300 thousand. Want to do just what you said. D60/14 bolt, 4L80, 205. I think it makes a great rig even better. I'm just debating if I should just get a square body burb instead.

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

leaf spring SAS kits add 3" on top of the usual 4" min lift spring swap in .

but few have played a bit and used less lift spring and more clearance work to fit .

crossover is less work in these as the correct steering box is in there already .

offroad design / diy4x / few other's out there . 1st 2 would be my choice tho .

i would find a pass side drop np241 from a 90-91 blazer/ suburban and swap that in so the stock electronics never know the difference over the 205 as much as i like my 205 cases .

also dont forget the abs system . . . .

looks good as is but would be a cool build...I've seen several 90s trucks done with sas but never a burb...

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

I've been looking and reading SAS for a long time, trying to figure out exactly what I need, and mainly what it will look like. If I didn't already have brand new 375/65s on rims, I'd go with a low SAS. I think if you make the brackets, you can get away with a lower overall height. Most of the companies that make the brackets are made for 3" wide springs. I have the kit from DIY4X and is awesome. I think the only kit that is adjustable, front mounts have the holes 1" apart so can put the axle exactly where you want it. Also the rears are symmetrical, so if you wanted to try 52s over 47s, they unbolt and flip em around. Ive seen some 2wd SAS that are low, and they way I see it, if they can go low there is no reason a 4wd can't. Biggest hurdle is the lower control arm mount/crossmember, if using a GM axle with low lift, it will have to come out, or some serious trimming. Also if low enough, draglink could hit the frame, could either notch, or run the inverted Y like Ferd uses, draglink goes to pass side of the tierod.

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

Isn't ORD's GU47032 kit for stock springs? In their notes it says nothing about 4" springs required, or any other lift.

What electronics would I be concerned with using the NP205? You mean the Speedo?

I stumbled on this one and seeing it with a rack something like I've wanted got me more inspired. I don't care for much of anything else (got lights? ), but you see a lifted white Suburban with full roof rack similar to what I'll build

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

Not quite sure what they mean. Stock springs are 3 1/2” wide, aftermarket are 3”. All the brackets that I’ve seen are for aftermarket springs. Maybe give em a call and see. Since you have a 4l80, you might’ve able to run a 205 from 86-91. We all know the 91 205 is rare as hen’s teeth, and only reason is the VSS. But you might be able to use an older one if you can put the VSS in the tail of the tranny like a 2wd one. Low range shifts get funky but there is a fix for that, just can’t remember what it is.

You can install parking break on the rear out put of the T-case. Parts Mike makes them they are set up for VSS.

Tim,
Just throw that D60 and 14Bff under there and don't look back. Is the current front drive a passenger drop?

88-up trucks are driver drop, so would need a ferd axle or swap t-cases to pass drop...

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

Main problem was ORUs kit.....I had that kit on the 89 I did years ago. I used both Ford and GM axle, and was better with the Ford, never got death wobble. Never even got it aligned and went OK down the road.

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

What expenses aren't a I seeing? I know Dana 60 parts are expensive if I rebuild that. I have the components and just need conversion parts. I don't see it costing more than an IFS swap and rebuild combined.

I want to do this to build something that suits me. I think 4" lift on 88-98s looks awesome. Been driving IFS trucks since before they made lift kits for 8-luggers. Even though I would have loved to see my trucks sit like that, I would never put a dime towards that lift. It gains you nothing but to go to the next size bigger tire.

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

It’s been over ten years since I did mine, and never installed an IFS lift. The kit and crossover steering costs almost as much as an IFS lift. Shocks, extended brake lines, front driveshaft/exhaust are all parts that IFS needs to, just they come with it. I did mine on a shoe string budget, it drove pretty good, even with no sway bar and cheap shocks.

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

One big difference in what I want and what you had, is yours was a pretty and perfect street driven truck. This Suburban will be a general purpose do what ever I need go wherever I need to go utility-recreational use vehicle. It's something I already have that has a very clean body with no trace of rust. It's just another ho-hum older hand me down SUV...doesn't grab you as anything special. I like it for all the many uses and that it is a base model, basically a work truck rather than bells & whistles former status symbol. Cool factor is exactly what I want, along with pleasing myself with building something that isn't so special to others but just the way I want and those who know what they are looking at will really appreciate it. Might take a second look...then a closer longer look. I want custom that doeesn't look custom. Not shiny, not fancy, just a truck guy's truck he built to please himself.

I can build this just the way I would like to build an older GM 4wd that seems to be out of my price range. It will be my cool use for work and general chores truck instead of my '72, and I will get a smaller truck for good gas mileage since I no longer need a heaver truck every day. The Suburban isn't worth much money at all to sell towards the K2500 or K3500 SRW pickup (or preferable utility body) that will cost me far more than doing this work on the 'Burb.

Lastly, it doesn't matter how the cost of an IFS lift compares to a SAS swap because an IFS lift isn't what I want, not a consideration. Also, the IFS lift is one big single purchase where I can buy things for the swap individually until I have it all. And finally, it will be way cooler than an IFS lift if anyone notices... just the way I like it.

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

I feel the same way. I don’t NEED a SAS, but want one cause anybody can do an IFS lift. I don’t think there is one truck where I am that is SAS’d. Ive been collecting parts for years, and gotten great deals on parts. When was the last time you could get 78/79 high pinion dana 60 for $150?? I have a majority of the parts I need, just small stuff like rotors, calipers and what not, stuff easily available. Now I just need my tahoe back, and somewhere to do it. Warm weather would be nice too lol...

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

Yeah, like I said it's a pipe dream. Might happen (money), might not (reality). Each vehicle is just a part of the big pipe dream. If I could have things the way I want I'd have the 'Burb how I described, would also want a winch/bumper, headers and true duals down both sides of frame just like earlier trucks, and I really want buckets and console. I loved my old regular cab '92 K3500 with buckets for the comfy cockpit feel in a work truck. That's my office, man! Did I mention an LS coupled to the 4L80E? Either that or go the other way with one of my old 350s or 327s coupled to 4spd/205. Go totally mechanical!

So, that would be sittin' around the shop for GP and an economical up and down the road truck for work or save gas money. Both are going into a new dimension for me. I have always put a lot into my work trucks and don't know what good gas mileage is...other than my Harley. I'd like just a 2wd C1500 V6/5spd. I mean a deal on a 4wd would be nice. But, I kinda want to cross this line and go real baseline.

With the rack on the 'Burb the '72 will be relieved from duty, except for back-up. And, once I get the other truck it will be back to no racks and only chores. Then I can get as deep into it as I want. That is the big goal with trucks for me.

I also have a little short bed '67 2wd project in waiting. I want that to be it for 67-72s so I can get into other stuff I always wanted to. But that can be another post in my pipe dream. I kinda snuck the shop in there. That is high on the list and hopefully not a dream. I have to decide to stay here a while and build one or wait till the next place and sooner. Might find one with shop.

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

I look at it just like I would for putting a LS3 and 6 spd with narrowed rear axle in my AD truck...if its what I want then that's what I'm gonna do....I think a sas under that burb would be awsome....except for the cushy ride I hate all this independent front 4x4 stuff..lifted they just look awful.(to me).....even with no lift I couldn't tell you how many times I've changed out cv joints on mine and dads s10s...never had any problems with a SA...I've even considered a sas under my s10 blazer but by design it gains way more lift than I want...

Re: SAS Suburban Pipe Dream

Yeah, I always thought a solid axle S10 would be cool. I've always had lifted 4wds with big tires but trying to ween myself off of that. Pretty much have, just like a slight lift.

All my this has layers and I left out one thing that contributes to arriving where I am with this. All this drivetrain stuff I had for my 67-72 4wd stash and that is down to the '72 K2500. I had a '71 short bed Stepside I was going to use the 1t stuff on. I had lift springs, wheels, and, tires ready to build it. Sold that and decided to use all that on the '72. As time has passed I have come to realize this '72 has survived pretty well as an original unrestored truck that has decent options, including being a Sierra. I'm never going to do any hard 4 wheeling in it the original drivetrain can't take. So, I decided keep it intact and if I want a big bad 4wd I could buy a later crapped out truck or chassis to use under an older body since nothing will be original anyway
