Does anyone have the exploded view/parts list for the 350/np205 adapter? When I take this apart I want to replace the bearings. I know it's lasted 41 years but not sure if it will last another 41.

Have the factory adapter for a 4spd to 203 transfer case. Nice setup in the winter. That is a rare! 205s with autos were very common in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.

Jay,

I don't believe there are any bearings in there, actually its just the seals, and the splined coupling to mate the output of the trans shaft to the input of the transfer case.

I had mine apart a few years ago and replaced the seals for the same problems as the others are reporting, but I don't recall anything other then I put new gaskets on both sides of the adapters, and a pair of new seals.

Good luck, its not really that bad of a job, worst part is man handling the 205 backwards and out of the way to get the adapter off it.

When I was going through all this I noticed that the splined coupling was almost wiped out, and had actually wore out the output shaft of the trans also, but that was from the trucking being a snow plower all its life.

The original TH350 to NP205 set up had an intermediate bearing in the adapter BUT if you try to replace the splined shaft adapter (that the seal lip runs on) you will not be able to get one that has the machined step on it to accept the bearing, it will only come as a straight through splined adapter (chuck the bearing it doesn't do much anyway). When I first tried to order my replacement splined adapter I argued with the sales man and he said that was the only style he had (so I bought it duh), he was right. Lighter faster stronger, we can rebuild it....Here is a shot of the old splined adapter and useless bearing, also hopefully the resolution is high enough that you can zoom in on the page for a cut-away of the original adapter set-up. The box has the new adapter part number on it. Enjoys!

I replaced the bearing. It was a 207 or 209. Also replaced the seals. Taking the transfer case off by your self using a floor jack and some ratchet straps was like wrestling a grizzly bear. My neighbors in the apartment complex must have thought I was nuts.

The thing is still whining a bit, time to get a louder stereo.

Well got the truck began, and advancing out on the 500 mile journey to my new home and the truck began smoking big time, after about a 3 hour driving. It took a little, while to lastly take the 180 fill plug and out came the same unpleasant looking things.

np 205 only get atf when they are the weaker one with the syncros in them. There is a way to tell on the outer case. Has something to do with the round aluminum cover if my memory is right. Do a search on it.

Its pretty well known about the whole atf vs gear oil.... the new 89 i just bought has atf which im leaving in it because it calls for that, me personally if i ran an auto i would put atf in it and if i ran a manual like in my 87 i would put whatever i could find faster in it which would be gear oil. I have an 85 book that ill look in and see what it calls for but i think they switched it to atf around 88

just google search np205 atf and you will find endless amounts knowledge lol

lots of people switch to ATF from gear oil,, if you got an old tempermental 4 speed switching out to redline atf smooths everthing out, dosent hurt anything.
