That V8 sound

This thread about electric cars made me think of something from way back. Does anyone remember the Big V8 sound box they sold for bicycles in the 60’s or 70’s? I think it had a shifter and battery and made revving V8 engine sound.
That’s what the ev cars need.

Likely not the one you’re thinking of but would work.

Re: That V8 sound

VRRR-OOOOM!!! I remember the Mattel V-RROOM Hot Rod Engines. They sounded like something but not sure it was a V8 engine . These days I guess they could make one sound electric

I saw the title and it got me thinking how there is something about that V8 sound. The sound of V8 dual exhaust has had a grip on me all my life. I don't care what it is, it's so much cooler if it has that V8 sound.

Me too Tim. Me too.
I have always loved the sound of a V8 over any other engine. The early Ford flatheads even sounded cool.
I think you are right. That sound deal for bikes was probably by Mattel.
How about the sound of a straight 8 Buick? Now that one had a sound all it's own. My bud had a '40 Buick coupe with that engine.

I always thought flathead V8s had some of the best sounds, bar none. When I was a kid, there was a plywood mill that used one to dump logs from the trucks into the log pond.
Twin straight pipes up through the roof of the shack. I could listen to it for hours!

Re: That V8 sound

You know Chevy had a V8 engine around 1917 or so. I guess it didn't go over so well as I do not recall it being put in any Chevy cars or trucks until the 265 ci in 1955. I may have a pic or two of that original engine somewhere. I'll look.

https://jalopnik.com/5086646/engine-...t-chevrolet-v8

i'd like to hear that one.

Ford does that on some of their Mustangs:

My first car was a 1940 Pontiac Coupe with a straight 8. I had a friend of mine split the manifold for me and ran dual side pipes on it. Everyone thought it had some kind of V8 in it. Sweet sounding engine. Here is a picture taken in '57 or '58 before the change over. I have one with the side pipes somewhere.

I remember those rev boxes, they replaced one of the handlebar grips right?, Either one of my friends had one or at least a couple of bikes in the school yard bike rack had them.

Re: That V8 sound

I thought baseball cards made a better sound, especially a bunch of them . I thought they were cool but my folks didn't buy stuff like that. They'd rather hear me make my own noises. Once I heard them I didn't think they sounded so cool.

Here's what kids can get today. Pretty cool!

Re: That V8 sound

Chevy guys got used to hearing Ford V8s until '55. Then the Chevy V8 became the sound.

Nobody bought this guy a V-ROOM for his bike

Somehow the batteries always went dead in mine and couldn't be replaced...

Re: That V8 sound

Maybe they didn't have batteries at all. I think it had a shifter mounted on the top tube that you pushed to make the sound. I just assumed it had a battery. It may not. Was that late 60s or early 70s? I didn't have one. Oh and I made my own V8 sounds too.

Some of the new GM pickups and suv's sound good. My son in law bought a new Denali pickup last week and with the 6.2 engine, it sounds great.

How about the sound of a V8 in your back seat for the true V8 sound lover.

Re: That V8 sound

I remember that V8 sound add on for bikes back in the day. I remember the Schwinns the boys with the wealthier family than ours had. Cheater slicks, shifter, hand brakes, sissy bar, banana seats, little front tire droool! LOL.

I had a Huffy my parents had to put on lay away to pay for it. I think they got it at Coast to Coast. It had ape hangar handle bars that were non adjustable. Coaster brakes and banana seat. In order to make upgrades I had to comb the ditches for pop bottles to make money. Dad would occasionally give me small change if I did extra chores. Eventually I saved up for a sissy bar and blinkers!!!!

Re: That V8 sound

Yeah, I never got a new Sting Ray. Someone gave us a 20" '50s bike. I should have left it as is it would be worth big money now. It had the tank and rear rack, black & white 2-tone, called the Black Knight with a knights helmet logo. Only thing wrong was it had the wooden handlebars from a kiddie toy crammed into the neck. First I just stripped it down flat tracker style (after fixing handle bars). Little by little, after trips to the Schwinn dealer for a piece here and there I ended up with a "high-riser" or "banana bike". I tore it down, stripped the frame bare, and painted it candy apple green over gold base (yeah, I read the car & bike mags). I remember I always wanted a flared rear fender and that never happened.
