Sorry, I never seem to like these articles, too lightweight, like from a newbie perspective. We all know trucks didn't just come on strong in the last 5 years. Affordable options? Largely overlooked? Must be talking about other trucks. And gateway to classic cars? Not hardly.
Ford was doing the same thing in this era, not purely utilitarian. They weren't as stylish but they kept that basic design through '79, so they saw no need to follow GM being stylish. Ford offered Ranger XLT and Sport Custom upscale trim packages. The thing they lagged on were front disc brakes.
