Re: Lockout Info

Those are "big hub" Dana Spicer, they were phased out in late 1969.
Finding parts for them are a bear...

Re: Lockout Info

Thanks Vector it. When I bought the suburban it had sat for a while and they were hard to turn. I took them apart and cleaned them up good and now they work well. I like the originality but I am eventually going to swap the HO52 and the closed knuckle 44 with 4.56 gears for a D60 and 14 ff with 3.73 or maybe an NV4500 with 4.10's. I just need it to get through this winter. Thanks for the info.

Re: Lockout Info

There is absolutely nothing wrong with those hubs, they are tough as nails and take a lot of abuse. You did the best thing one can do, and that is to clean them and lube them. Since they are old, the grease gets petrified. Which makes them hard to operate, and also causes them to fail when being used.
They will definitely last you another season now.

Too bad you are so far away, since I'd be pickin over those old axles for little bits of parts I need after you swap them out.

When you do take them out, save the 3rd member and the axle shafts of the H0-52 since you can sell them easily. The axle itself is big and heavy, and not many people are interested int he whole assembly.
The front axle, I'd save the hubs and the drums.
The new replacement drums are garbage.

Re: Lockout Info

I am moving to Springfield MO this spring or maybe sooner. Wouldn't be much closer I guess but I will definitely let you know when I do the swap. All the front axle brake components and hardware is in good shape. I love this old thing and will drive it for a long time, it would be nice to be a little more highway friendly. It has manual everything and honestly steers and handles like it has power steering. I lurk here a lot and read all the time. Just figured its time to think about getting it upgraded.

Re: Lockout Info

Glad you opened up a thread about an often overlooked part that is very important on these old K20's.

My 1968 K20 Suburban is manual everything as well, and you are right they do handle very nice. It's just the parallel parking that gives you a work out!

Re: Lockout Info

My cj7 is manual as well and this suburban is like a Cadillac compared to the jeep.

Re: Lockout Info

once you do the axle swap I would be interested in the d44 manual hubs for my 71 k20.
