Faster steering
I,m doing some up grades to my 71, and I have heard that a 73 and newer PS box has 3.5 lock to lock ratio were my 71 has a 4.5. Does any know if you can up grade to the quicker and new box?

Yes you can, pretty much as simple as removing the pitman arm, the rag joint, PS lines and 4 mounting bolts.
It's a direct replacement, be sure the splines for the pitman are the same between the two, if not you'll need that as well. Quote:

only thing is they went metric on the lines and fittings not sure what year, if pulling from junk yard pull lines too.

Sometime along around the 80 time line is when the metric fitting thing happened. If you take the line take also the large nut from the back of the power steering pump[ that is the pressure regulator] it is all you need to change you existing pump over to use the newer metric fittings. If you do go to the newer type fittings you can go up to the 87 model year on trucks and up to the 90 model year on the R-V series Suburban& Blazer[as long as the body is square and it is 2wd to 2wd or 4wd to 4wd]. The newer boxes may be even quicker[ratio wise] than the ones from the 70's with more improved road feedback and steering control.

77-79 boxes have the closer ratio, and are not yet metric. Be prepared to change the rag joint. I have done two in the last six months, both we're the close ratio (3 1/2 turns), and had the same part number. one had the .72 old style shaft at the rag joint, and the other had the .62 shaft at the rag joint. I have been doing this swap for over 30 years, and sometimes I have to change to the newer .62 diameter rag joint and sometimes I can use the old rag joint. Apparently the rebuilder doesn't pay much attention to the diameter of the input shaft.

Classic Performance has a brand new 500 series "modern" box for our trucks. All I can say is wow! Completely changes the characteristics of the truck all in a good way. Last I checked it is not on their website need to call them to order. It is direct fit but you need to get a new rag joint which they can provide.

I assume that it wouldn't make much sense to get one of the manual steering bolt-in boxes unless I eat enough spinach to develop Popeye arms?
