Thumbs up 1962 Camper/Motorhome

Yesterday I went and looked at a 1962 Camper/Motorhome and could not pass up buying it. It belonged to my parents friend and is basically a 2 owner vehicle. I have a ton of questions about the setup. It has 32,253 original miles and is mostly factory stock with no rust. It has been in Louisiana and Arkansas all of its life. I couldn't believe that the cab corners, cab floor supports are rock solid. It was undercoated so I am sure that helped as well.

It is badged as a C20 with a tag that rates the max vehicle weight at 7500 lbs. It is a dually and the camper was supposedly built by Kustom campers. I am just starting to research who the camper manufacturer was.

I was surprised it was a dually and would appreciate any info anyone could give me on C20 duallys. We are heading over today to pay for it and get it started and drive to my parents.

I will be posting a lot more and am still not sure what I am going to do with the new project but just could not pass up buying it.

Re: 1962 Camper/Motorhome

Wow, that is really cool! I would get it home and do a full-blown top to bottom inside and out cleanup job on it and see what you've got. That truck is really, really solid. I like the fact that the camper is basically original and untouched.

I have wanted one of those for a long time, but I need another project like I need a hole in my head. I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures and details as you dig deeper into this time machine!

Re: 1962 Camper/Motorhome

The duals were most likely added by Kustom Campers when the camper was installed.. The brake parts on the rear axle should be C20 parts. The duals were added for handling the extra weight and added stability. There is a truck locally that had the same dual wheel conversion

Is it still in Arkansas? Wouldn't mind getting a look at it before it leaves. Nice looking rig. Jim

Re: 1962 Camper/Motorhome

Thank you for all of the positive comments! Sorry for not responding sooner but have been very busy for the past couple of days. Got the camper running on Monday morning after draining the gas tank and putting in some new gas. It started on the 3rd try! We then had to jack up the back and get the brakes unfrozen and then the same on the front. The previous owner had started it every couple of months but it has been a few years since it was moved.

Once we pulled it out of the shed and got the paperwork done, down the road we went. Got one mile down the road and it stalled. Figured it might need more gas, we only put in 3 gallons. Got more gas and started her up again and made it another mile and stalled again. Decided it was time to get some help so we put her on flat bed and got her to my Dad's place.

Yesterday we pulled the carb and realized why it kept dying. Ton's of crud in the bowl.

Now the dumb thing was that I was so busy working on it I forgot to get more pictures. The first couple of pictures below I took at 5 am this morning. We had to head home to Illinois today based on meetings tomorrow and Friday.

I found out more about the truck on Monday. A local guy around the Cabot AR area bought the camper new from the dealer. He had it for about 15 years and then sold it to the father in-law of the women I bought it from. Her father in-law gave it to her husband in the early 80s and they have had it since. They had a number of other campers and used this one as their fishing camper; her husband loved to fish.

The camper has only taken two trips out of Arkansas in its life, one to Iowa and one to northern IL. Outside of that it was used to go to lakes and rivers in Arkansas. Now I understand why it only has 32K miles on it.

I am still amazed at how clean and solid it is. I got underneath it and the wood is solid. Went through all 4 compartments on the outside and the wood there is great as well.

Below is a picture of the bed over the cab.

Also below is a picture of the stove and sink. Both work!

This camper has been very well cared for. I was amazed at how clean the oven is, take a look at the picture below.

I will keep posting some updates on the camper. I thought about starting a build thread but we are really not doing a build. Plans are to replace the brakes, hoses, flush the fluids, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, etc., rebuild the carb, clean the gas tank/lines and then put a new set of tires on it. Current tires have great tread but are very weather checked.

Thanks again for all the positive comments and sorry this was such a long post.

Hopefully my buddy Don (TaDon) has some more pictures he can post. Was great seeing him yesterday! I think he got some pictures of the coolers that are located under both seats in the back. I would guess you could get 10-15 bags of ice in both coolers.

Re: 1962 Camper/Motorhome

So I've cleaned up the 62 motorhome for da_bears_da1 and have it listed on ebay!

This thing is incredible! I have scrubbed and cleaned on it for a couple of weeks and it's remarkable how good of shape this rig is in!

New set of tires, shocks, and plenty of elbow grease!
