Clutch won't release
I have a new slave cylinder and had a shop bleed it. I have replaced the clutch pressure plate, pilot bushing and throw out bearing. Clutch would not release and I was told the new pressure plate was bad so I got a new one and replaced it. Now it still won't release.

Re: Clutch won't release
Made sure it was in correct the second time and it was. Also the hydraulics have been bled at a shop after I couldn't get it to release the first time.

Re: Clutch won't release
Wrong throw out bearing? There are a short and a long and they don't interchange.

Re: Clutch won't release
There were no shims on the old slave and if I put them on the new one I would have less travel. The throw out bearing Is exactly the same as the one that came out. I compared them side to side.

Re: Clutch won't release
A improper or improperly installed pilot bearing (bushing) will do this . If the bearing is not seated all the way ( or to long ) the input shaft will bind against it and keep it turning . Clutch will have no affect .
I would first get someone to work the clutch pedal while you are looking at the plate to see if it releasing . You should have at least .010 on both sides of the clutch disc to release proper . If it is releasing I would look into the pilot bearing . Could also be the hole in the bushing is a little to small and keeping the shaft turning . |

Re: Clutch won't release
tyler..I just helped a buddy swap from auto to stick....and the instructions for the slave specifically called for it to be shimmed...remember...it doesn't move much....we installed bellhousing on block and measured to clutch fingers and then turn around and measure the other way to the trans....the difference is how much it needs shimmed...shimming does not change the amount of travel....it simply moves the slave into the proper operating position. ...if its not in the right spot all your doing is pushing air...have you looked to see if its contacting the clutch fingers...you could mark it with a sharpy or dikum to check if you can't get to where you can see...
also as homemade says...could be a binding pilot ... |

Re: Clutch won't release
Was this with a hydraulic release bearing? The OP's truck has an external slave that pushes on a fork. He has 2 different threads about the issue, so it is difficult to know the details of what he is working with.

Re: Clutch won't release
The slave is external and if it were to be shimmed it would be farther away from the clutch fork. I don't think the pilot bearing could be the problem, when I installed the tranny I didn't have any problems getting it lined up and it slid into place fairly easily. I did replace the master cylinder tonight and got a lot better feeling on the pedal but I may not have got all the air out of it.

Re: Clutch won't release
Did you mike the throwout bearing or just eyeball it ? On some applications the difference is only 1/16 of a inch or less.Let us know the fix when you get it.

Re: Clutch won't release
UPDATE. The issue has been resolved. I took it into a shop and they pulled the clutch and installed a new one but a different brand and it works perfectly fine. I purchased 2 brand new clutch kits from Napa and both of them were bad. Sachs clutch works great.

If people won't spend the extra $ to buy American,, the old 'tried and true' has to put the cheap import parts on their shelf,, then they have an overpriced import POS just like everyone else. I had a similar experience with a CarQuest TPS with 2 being bad,, first electronically defective and a second the internal return spring was broke,,,, Of course it took a weekend of diagnosis to figure out WTH was going on. Ended up I had to go buy a imported POS from Autozone on a Sunday afternoon and guess what,.. it WORKED flawlessly. It's a sad statement to make but this same scenario is happening all too often. Sorry to hijack the post Tyler but just has to share and say,,, I feel your pain buddy.
