I read a book many years ago written by the warden of a state prison. He went into detail about how the rope has to be tied and then seasoned with a weight so that it doesn't stretch when the person is hanged. If it stretches, the person could just strangle to death instead of just getting a broken neck, which ain't pretty. Of course, dying by hanging isn't going to be pretty, in any event, but hey, what can I say?
