Winshield Install Price

What should it cost me to have a new winshield put in? I've been getting quoted from 115 to 800 and everything in between. I've never had a winshield put in anything so I have nothing to reference. I priced out the front seal and rear seal from brothers and its about 100 bucks worth of seals.

Re: Winshield Install Price

Be sure to tell them the type of windshield gasket you want installed.

Most places will use the "self-locking" style vs. the "channel insert style".

If you have the chrome insert in your current one and wish to keep it, you will have to replace with channel insert style (you may have to supply) since they may not carry it in stock.

Enjoy,

Enjoy,
I think most of them know about the lock strip because some have asked if mine is chrome or black. Almost toying with the idea of trying it myself

I’d get someone to do it for you.
You might have a surprise or two hidden under it.
The window channel could be rusty.

Re: Winshield Install Price

Just a FYI.
These are about the easiest windshields out there to install!
$100.00 would be a fair price here to install.
Most installers now a days are charging you for their lack of experience.
Find someone who's done them before!
Mike.

Re: Winshield Install Price

i do my own .

1 strip install tool around 20bucks .
1 plastic bar tool for little spots under 5 bucks .
1 bottle of dawn dish soap blue under 5 bucks .
1 squirt bottle from dollar store .
1 bottle of blue window washer fluid .

then slow and steady take your time and lots of lube .

lube mix 3/4 squirt bottle of blue washer fluid / 1 heavy squeeze of dawn dish soap . mix and spray .

but as said looks can be deceiving . my 1 truck had no paint signs of problems in the gasket area untill i removed it in prep for paint . half a day later and 5 patches i had the metal fixed .

Re: Winshield Install Price

IIRC, I paid around $145 for a front windshield that included the glass and done at my home. Unless your seal/gasket is torn up, I'd recommend just cleaning it up and using it. My $145 windshield got a crack after a week due to the new gasket being too stiff. Another $145 and a good junkyard gasket and a) the install went 100% easier and b) no problem with the new windshield for over a year.

Re: Winshield Install Price

Had mine done about 6 mos ago. Was $135 for the new glass + installation. Had been talking to the big chain places and none seemed to have anyone that knew how to do the older vehicles. Stumbled onto an older independent guy replacing a windshield in a parking lot and he has been doing it for 25 years. He came to my house the next day and it took him about 15 minutes to pop the old one out and put the new one in.

If you search: 80's chevy truck windshield replacement on YouTube, you'll get quite a few videos on how to replace the windshield. It seems somewhat easy if you have help.

Just have to soap up all the rubber really good and get some plastic wedges. I never had issues installing them but getting them out in one piece I had issues with. I eventually just started cutting the seal of a truck I was just junking anyways

Re: Winshield Install Price

I have owned 3 old squares including my current 83 C20. All of the windshields have leaked. They leak at the top corners and the lower corners where the sheet metal around the opening is pinched together. The pinching is not done very well, so the upper sheet metal does not lie flat against the lower sheet metal and this causes the windshield to leak.

On my 76, I went to Safelite who installed the windshield before I bought it. I asked them to let me see the opening before they reinstalled the windshield. I pointed out the raised sheet metal and they beat it down with a hammer, then used sealant in those areas prior to re-installation of the windshield. That fixed the problem.

So, I would not let anyone install your windshield unless they allow you to inspect the opening prior to installation. You can beat down any raised sheet metal you see before they install it. You may also have rusty sheet metal in this area, especially if it has been leaking.

I am planning on having the best shop in town install my windshield so I make sure that it is done right. They use only Precision brand windshield seals. I will point out the problem to them before they begin as I described above.

On my current 83 I can see the seal raised up maybe 1/32" in the corners, and I ran a hose over the windshield and saw the leaks. I am redoing the interior of my truck due to damage caused by years of unseen windshield leaks. The water runs down the dash under the dash pad and collects along the kick panel/floor board seam, so you don't see it since it is under the carpet. I would do the same test on your truck before getting the windshield replaced. You may have a truck that has no flaws, but I doubt it.

Re: Winshield Install Price

You are not suppose to use soap on putting windows in. I use to but I found out there is alot of salt in soap which can rust out the channel. A glass place told me to use windex because it will evaporate. I have been using windex and a rope now for several years and works great. oh and always use the best quality rubber don't buy the cheap stuff.

I got my precision gaskets from gmcpauls.

I provided the gasket and the company I contacted provided the glass and installation. I think I paid $210.00 + precision gasket total.

Re: Winshield Install Price

When working on the windshield warm it is the better. There pretty easy to do unless some one has glued it in or glued it self to rusted channel. Once you lubed it up well and popped out once they should take about 5-8 min to do a window and 10-16 min in and out with no hold up. Now if it never been worked on and suck it may take up 16-44 min out the first time. two people does help go faster. but take your time till you get the right angles the grove of doing it.

Re: Winshield Install Price

Where are some of you guys finding glass and installation for under $200?

Glass alone is going to coast me $199 + $125 shipping and no rubbers or installation? Only reason I haven't replaced mine on my project yet, is the shipping. Waiting for a decent one to land in a pick-n-pull.

Like a lot of others have said, I paid around 145 bucks for the glass to be installed at my shop.

The installer would only use precision seals.

I'm lucky!
My family has been in the glass business since the 50's.
My dad and uncle were lifelong glaziers.
My brother still does it.
I get my glass thru him for about $70.00 for the windshield in a 73/up.
That's about wholesale price.
And,some insurance companys will replace it for your deductable, which is also waived by the installer,so it can be done for free!
