'05 2500HD Cluster issue

I know these trucks have issues with the gauges but mine is the tach only. It pegs the tach doing 40mph in overdrive.Sometimes it works fine. Where does it get it's signal from? All the rest of them I have seen with problems have had fuel gauge issues or something other than the tach.. Any input would be great.

Its the stepper motor, Ive seen EVERY combination of gauge malfunctions on these trucks.

The PCM sends a (2 pulses per engine revolution) engine speed signal on a dedicated curcuit to the IPC.

Re: '05 2500HD Cluster issue

dorman products offers reman gauges with a life time warranty they come preprogramed with your vin and mileage in the just bolt in and go, only down fall is the core charge on them is $300 dollars which you get back when you take the old one back the clusters normall run 240-300 dollars, i order them from advance auto parts, they have to call dorman to order them if they say they cant

If you are handy with a soldering iron it is an easy fix. Usually you can send it off for a week or two and get it fixed for under $100, but you will be without a cluster for that time. Or as truckdude has mentioned you can buy a reman cluster and send yours in as a core. Make sure you get it preprogrammed, otherwise it is $80 at the dealer to program your mileage. There are quite a few reputable dealers on Ebay that can get you a stock replacement preprogrammed cluster for under $200 that were around before Dorman started selling these clusters a couple years ago.
