What's so special about 1964?

New member, Glad I found y'all.

Mom had a 1964 which was sold by a sibling (grr). Naturally, that means, now that I am searching for a pickup, that's the year I want.

That being said, I am getting tons of hits on many for sale sites for every 60s model year EXCEPT 1964. What gives? And why does it have to be THAT year? (the second question is between me and the Universe)

I think 64 was the 1st year of the Cab Changes. I have a 64 and I love it.

1964's are absolutely hands down the best of the 60-66 body style and frankly the best year since Chevy started selling trucks in 1918 until now.

That's my biased opinion and I'm sticking to it.

1964, 65, and 66 are identical to the common observer. Minimal differences show in emblems, interior, and paint details. The optional equipment list grew a bit through those years, so the 1966 model year could be outfitted with a bigger motor, air cond, and so on. Still basically the same truck though. Production was also greater in 66, so finding the right '64 might be just slightly less easy than a '66 model. No matter, good luck on the '64 quest. Let us know when you get one.

I have two 64's.......they seem Kinda popular where I live....but 66's are EVERYWHERE.

One thing I keep reading is that the 1963 and 1964 models have a 17 spline rear axle. That seems to be a negative for folks who want to modify their rear axle. It changed to something else in 1965.

seems to me if your truck is stock then some of the differences might make a difference on preference and taste, and for pure restoration integrity.
but if not a stocker and modified with upgrades, i do not see any big difference between these year models.
they all look the same to me.
but i can see the point being made, i.e.
66 and 67 chevelles are very similar, yet i highly prefer 66 over 67 in looks and it is really just a few small styiing mods that make them different. the bodies are identical.
not sure if the c10 differences are as pronounced and the chevelle example.

If I remember correctly the 64 C-10 was the first year of self adjusting brakes.

Go to Hemmings.com and do a year specific search.

I found 10 for sale from (hold onto your hats) $119,000 down to $2,000.

If the year 64 is just a physiological deal or nostalgia because that is what your family had, then I understand. If you don't care as much, then the best, solid, rust free truck you can find would be what I'm after, much harder to find one of those in any year, and differences are not earth shattering. The front grille change, the door and the front windshield. There's ton of chevy 60-66 but you don't see GMC 60-66 those are hard to find ...

the 60-61 are getting hard to find, I personally like the 61 grill much better, although im a bit biased

This is really it in a nutshell. Mostly cosmetics, few mechanicals. Only us purists will relish in the differences between the '64 and the '65 -'66. Besides the emblems, and a few different factory paint colors, '64's used the older triangle style arm rests, early to mid year '64's had white steering wheels and columns. Seat patterns and steering wheels are indentical to '65, but different than '66 models.
