looking to rebuild dana 44

ok so ive never done this before was wondering what you guys have payed in the past to have it done and or do it your self need to know how much i need to start saving for so i can rebuild my dana 44 front

not including break parts or lockouts I'v never spent more than $200 to re-build a D-44 as long as the carrier and pinion bearings were good, that's all other seals, bearings, balljoints, u-joints, and fluids

I just finished this there is a handy service pdf floating around. It cost me more then a few hundred dollars. but im hopeing going from a drum closed knuckle to disk open knuckle is worth is.
What it cost me:
sand blasting/ paint $60
Seals bearings $150
Ball joints installed $200
Hubs $200
Axle u joints $75
New drag link and stearing arm. $400

I was going to get a dana 60 but then I would be into it 2k instead of this. I got most of my parts from my Napa store because they seem to be the onyl ones that can figure anything out around here.

what about cost of 4.56 gears and axles

4.56 gears might run you $300 in parts (google is your friend) but labor to install a R&P is nuts. If you can do an install yourself you'll save a ton of cash.

You can use the stock axle shafts if you want. If you want to go with aftermarket I think you can expect to pay $4-600 for a full set plus the cost of U-joints.

Setting-up a new gear-set is NOT a job for a novice. No matter how many procedural manuals you read or videos you may watch, there is a lot more to it than most are willing to believe. It takes some specailized tools and a lot of patience....an experienced helper watching over your shoulder would be even better.
It's a skill that takes quite a bit of experience to master, and unless you intend do it for a living, it is not worth the hassle. Most people will only ever need to have it done once or twice ever.

Pay a professional and get yourself a warranty for your efforts.....

Oh, and as always "Use SYNTHETIC LUBE" it is worth the coin.

thats what ive been asking this whole time what does it run to have a shop do this Parts and Labor getting a dana 44 soon and i want to have it rebuilt so not to end up like my buddy and it break 2 months down the road

Call a local shop and ask. My guess to replace EVERYTHING (which is what it sounds like you want to do though I am not sure why) would be $2000 in parts and labor.

And no matter what money you throw at the Dana 44 if you put big tires and wheel it you're asking for breakage. For $2000 I would go D60 and leave it at that.

im only looking at putting 35s on it so not very big and im looking at something that bolts up so i dont have to swap out a bunch of crap the truck will be more for daily driving than offroad

If you are looking for 4.56 gears then why not just upgrade to a Dana60 out of a CUCV? For the cost of your upgrade you could get into a bullet proof dana60....

Do you want new gears installed or want a new axle?

What I did to mine wasn't difficult I didnt set any gears I figure I will drive it to a shop and have them put a posi and new gears in. I dont use 4 wheel drive much. so I have to make the all on 4:10's like in my rear diff or 3:73's in my front diff. I wanted the breaks new bearings and all that more then the gears.
I wanted a new axle so I striped mine down and did alot of the labor that I could do on it myself. I had the Ujoins replaced by a driveline shop and had some one else sand blast it and as I said above I will have some one put in new gears. But if you can read and have a brass drift punch Im sure you could knock it out. In my situation it is much easier to take a component like axle shafts in and ask to have it repaired then the whole unit. Even if you dont feel like you cant put it back together most good shops can and you have taken it apart and cleaned it up and that would save you coin.
