what does a cracked flywheel sound like

i have been having a metal on metal contact sound coming from the flywheel area. its louder in the beginning of a gear and lightens up and then gets loud as it shifts into the next gear. is this a cracked flywheel sound?

Pull the cover and make sure its not the torque converter bolts if there tight you should beable to look with a flashlight and see a crack around the crank.

Re: what does a cracked flywheel sound like

a cracked flexplate sounds like a lower end knock, ive heard some that sounded like main bearings, others sounded like rods. TC bolts typically sound like rods.,

Re: what does a cracked flywheel sound like

I agree. Mine sounded like a rod knocking, so I got a crate 350 to replace a 305. After removal flexplate was cracked at crank bolts. Anyway, I got a 350.

Re: what does a cracked flywheel sound like

well i got under the truck and inspected it with a flashlight. i couldnt see any cracks, however it might be cracked around the crank and not the bolts.

Re: what does a cracked flywheel sound like

I agree, I have heard them sound just like a rod knocking.

Hope you get it figured out.

Re: what does a cracked flywheel sound like

it sounds like a dryer with a hand full of pennies. it is loudest at the beginning of each gear.

Re: what does a cracked flywheel sound like

Are you sure it's the transmission? I've heard pebbles in the catalytic converter heat shield described as you have.

Re: what does a cracked flywheel sound like

had the same problem with my jeep thought it was carbon balls in the cat so i took my handy dandy angle grinder and removed it for some reason I couldnt find any wrench or socket that would fit the bolts. anyway got it put back together without the cat and still had the noise. pulled the trans one day to fix a leak got to looking around and found the crack.
