Diesel?

Kind of a random question here.. My neighbor has a 68 1-1/2 ton with what he claims is a factory diesel motor.. He is extremely knowledgeable regarding these trucks. He says he knows it was never a factory option but this one has it. I can't remember what the motor is? And I have seen a few tricks with diesel badges that appear very original looking. Please enlighten me?

Re: Diesel?

Back in that era it was possible to special order most any engine in a truck from the factory for a very small additional cost. In the mid 70s a friend of mine ordered a Ford pick up with a Lincoln engine. I am not sure if it performed any better but it was what he wanted.

Re: Diesel?

In a Dodge you could get a Perkins. GM had their own diesels, I'm not sure what else was available.

Re: Diesel?

I recall from guys I knew with the GM diesels that they didn't last too long. they always ended replacing them with gas engines.

Re: Diesel?

Hamjet is comparing apples to oranges The olds Diesel was not the generals best idea for sure it was a gas engine [or close] converted to diesel. Some were ok some were junk at best then in the early eighties came the 6.2 it was not really a power house that people come to think of in todays duramax's but they were great engine I had one in a 89 1/2 that I used to pull my car hauler trailer in between duallys and I had 300 thousand and it sat for almost 2 years I went to crank it and it never did prime the pump. Now the OP said it was a 1and 1/2 ton so it is possible it could have been a 53 series diesel or there was a GMC motor called toro flow. Jim

Re: Diesel?

Say, "That's really cool. Can I look at the SPID?"

If the factory put it in there, it's going to be on the SPID.

Yea, the one I remember best was a fella I worked with around 78? He bought a brand new chevy pickup with the 5.7 diesel and it lasted about 3-4 years. It blew up. he ended up putting a gas engine in its place..

Re: Diesel?

Agree with hugger if its a 68 1 1/2 ton then my money is on a 53 series Detroit 353/453/653 , prior to the 53 series it was a 71 series built by GM 371/471/671, had a 371 in a old A.C HD 7 dozer from the 40s and a 353 in both a 67 and 68 Dyna hoe '

I pulled the 353 out of the 67 and bolted it in a ford ranger , sold it to a close friend of mine 6 yrs ago and he still running it around. and they do live up to there nickname Screamin Demon.
