No brakes lights, need ideas

Switch is bench tested good
Bulbs are bench tested good, both filaments
Rear running lights work fine
Rear turn lights work fine

No brake lights. When i had the switch removed for testing, I also tried jumping the wires at the switch plug, no joy.

I suck at wiring. Any ideas?

A ground somewhere?

Re: No brakes lights, need ideas

The ground is shared by all 6 bulbs in the tail... The turnsignals work so the filaments will light.

The 4-way hazards work??? No? Replace the STOP HAZ fuse.

Turn signal stalk set to fully cancelled position??? Brake lamps go through the turnsignal switch.

Re: No brakes lights, need ideas

Spoke too soon... Fuse is symptom, not root cause. Replaced fuse, and it blew as soon as I stepped on the brakes. 20A fuse. Hazards did not blow fuse. Ideas?

Re: No brakes lights, need ideas

The White wire from brake light to turnsignal switch is probably chafed and grounding either between the brake pedal and the harmonica connector on the bottom of the column. OR. Between the harmonica connector and the turnsignal switch inside the column.
My money is on the short White wire inside the column.

Re: No brakes lights, need ideas

If it's in the column you'll have to pull the turnsignal switch assembly off far enough to reach the wires.

You should be able to carefully release the terminal from the harmonica connector, slip the WHITE wire up and out of the column with a string tied to it and slip a piece of heatshrink over the wire or paint on several layers of liquid electrical tape to cover the damaged PVC insulation Then pull it back in using the string, and latch the terminal back into the harmonica.

It's not as bad as it sounds just time consuming and fussy.

All of the 1980 GM factory service manuals are in my sig.

Re: No brakes lights, need ideas

I have had the white wire right at the harmonica connector crack enough wires for it to fail and the plastic cover hold it on.
hatzie has a good idea also.

Re: No brakes lights, need ideas

Mine was a problem at the long connector also. The wire on mine backed out, and wasn't making contact. I would start at that connector.

Re: No brakes lights, need ideas

You can find the 1980 tilt column on PG 6-42 & PG 6-43 in the 1979-1984 GM 52A Light Truck Parts-Illustration books. Follow the links to GM parts wiki host site for our square body parts manuals.

If the wiring is too far gone... The GM-AC-Delco turnsignal switch part # for your 1980 Tilt Column is 1997985. You can buy that AC Delco switch, brand new, on Amazon for $20. http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-1997985-Switch-Assem... http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-1997985-Switch-Assem...
Make sure the plastic wiring protector is in place and the wires are running along it instead of rubbing on the internals of the column.
Automatic protector is GM # 7828270
Manual protector is GM #7817247
