My CLR experience... so far.

My new truck had a hazy grey look that I thought was just oxidized paint (originally Med. Olive) but as I CLR'd it today I realized it might just be some sort of rattle can layer but I'm pretty pleased with the patina and the look I'm getting. Its been a lot of work (elbow grease).

I'm using 50/50 CLR to Water. Any other advice from other member's experience with this? I'm hoping to clear coat in the future.

I am no CLR expert. In my opinion the hazy part you are taking off is oxidized paint. The green pad is taking off that last little bit of original paint that was left over the original primer in those thin spots. It looks like you may be rubbing a little hard. The pressure points (corners) seem to be taking the brunt of the pad.

I might be but I will say that a lot of the metal showed up with no effort...just sitting right under the oxidized paint.

I am no expert, and you are the one doing the work, so I am sure you are right. You just have very thin paint in those places.

Re: My CLR experience... so far.

so how will you keep it from rusting now that you removed the last of the paint?

Re: My CLR experience... so far.

hate to say it also, but it looks like you are using the wrong scuff pad or rubbing way too hard, especially on the edges.

Re: My CLR experience... so far.

you could be rubbing a bit hard since there is very little paint left and you said it was a lot of energy.

Re: My CLR experience... so far.

Maybe just fine rubbing compound will do the trick.

Re: My CLR experience... so far.

You took the original paint off. Bascially it looks like you are sanding for a new paint job. The bare metal will need primer/paint over it now. And remember, primer is not much good without paint over it.

Re: My CLR experience... so far.

Ok so day 2.

I think you guys are right and I was scrubbing a little too hard. I was trying to get all the grey oxidized paint off but didn't know my own strength. The original paint underneath was so pretty (but thin). Today I was a little more delicate and was mindful of the corners. There are still places, mostly in the back half and not pictured, where the paint just gave up and came off with no effort.

I also tried a number of other things including rubbing compound and using a rag instead of scothbright pad. None seemed to work well/better.

I still like the way it looks and wonder is a clear coat will preserve it for at least a while.

Thats going to be a good question...maybe get original matching top coat color and do a few touchups. I'll have to cross that bridge sooner than later.

Re: My CLR experience... so far.

I would sand and paint the truck correctly, but I am not a patina guy. Anything you put on that doesn't seal it is a waste of time and if you just clear it that will all have to come off when you do decide to fix the problem ,and it will turn into a problem unless you keep it out of bad weather.
