Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

I am planning to install two 4 inch speakers under the dash to replace the dual voice coil 4 by 10 in there now. Anyone else tried this? I have door speakers to provide base.

I did that on my 64 impala I installed 2- 4" infinity cappa speakers on a 1/2 plywood base and wrapped in black fabric.

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?l

I just did this on my Dad’s ‘70 442 convertible. I fabbed a plate up with 20 gauge steel painted it black, mounted in 2 kicker 43dsc44’s and mounted it in place of the factory single speaker. It sounds way better than a single replacement speaker but not great.

It wouldn’t be any harder for our trucks. In my truck I am doing 6.5s in the kick panels, because you can only expect so much sound out of 4in speakers.

2 kicker 43dsc44’s, Those are the same speakers I bought to do mine. Hope they are louder than the dual coil speaker. My truck has 6 by 9 's in the door panels, I am going to use for woofers.

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

I used 2 5inch Alpines for the dash, had to fab a frame, pretty easy, and a powered 8inch woofer under the seats. Sounds nice.

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

I squeezed in a pair of Polk Audio MM461P under the dash still deciding if I want to add speakers to the doors or kick panel with a sub under the seat.

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

I used a pair of 3" x6" speakers in my Burban. I liked they way they had more cone area lined up with the speaker slots than a pair of 4" speakers.

There are several threads on this in the audio section of this website. Do a search there. They show how to make mounting plates, attach, wire... Everything.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

I got lucky and found a pair of '67 rust free doors in excellent shape no one else wanted because they had 6x9 ovals cut in the door.... for cheap! Saved me from having to ruin perfectly good doors Hey, if GM offered a stereo system that's where they would have put them.

I also bought a pair of '72 scroll door panels someone had installed 6 1/2s in for next to nothing...with speakers for dirt cheap. I'll just set my originals off to the side for if and when being purely original matters. I like good sounding music.

I'll probably just go 3-way, but if I go component the speakers in dash would be a good idea. I had a nice '72 door for sale at a swap meet with one rust spot in the lower rear corner (for cheap). Guys would look at the inside and say if it wasn't for the speaker hole they would have taken it. I don't get that. No worries over the rust repair required but curse that bedeviled speaker hole that would be so much easier to repair. Holes on the dash would be easy to fix... on a restoration.

Cut them doors and lower them trucks and put late model engines in them but you better not cut that dash man! If you do you just killed that truck!

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

I have 2 x 4" speakers in place of the factory 4 x 10. I used a piece of plywood for the base. Used some stick on weather stripping around the edge so I could press it up against the dash. I used the bracket from the original speaker to hold it in place. I think the mounting is still kind of rigged, more balanced in place with zip ties.

It's being powered by a 70's tape deck I got at a swap meet for $5.

I am really happy with how it sounds. By no means great, but it works, gets decently loud, has some bass to it. Best off all, I built it out of spare parts, and didn't have to destroy any factory parts to get it installed.

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

Hey, the PO of my truck actually cut 2 - 4x6 speaker holes in the dash! I didn't find that out till I pulled the glued on dash vinyl that extended over the pad

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

Would two 4x6's fit and do better than two 4" round? I have an old Kraco deck in mine and someone has put bookshelf speakers under the seat.

Re: Two 4 inch spearkers for dash?

My setup. Not great, but it works well. I think the piece of wood on the bottom is zip tied to the factory bracket and there is no connection between the speakers and the bracket. It is just holding it in place. Stick on weatherstripping around the edges for a tight fit.
