4L60E dead?

I have a 99 Suburban 1500 with 5.7. Driving fine on the freeway and gave it more gas to pass and instead of kick down to lower gear it acted like it went to neutral. Now Park works, all other gears are like neutral. What could cause sudden failure. Could it be outside of trans like a computer or electrical problem? Or could it only be internal like the pump broke? Thanks.

Re: 4L60E dead?

Can you provide some history on the truck.... what has been done to the truck lately anything ? you checked the fluid and its nice and clean, red like ATF is suppose to be....
Any noises ? TC come loose ?

First, take the metal plug out of the bottom of the bell housing and see if the TC is loose Is it OK ?

Re: 4L60E dead?

It doesn't move backwards or forwards?

Your first sentence describes what happens when the 3-4 clutches let go but you should still have R 1 and 2. An input sprag going out should at least backup.

No movement at all is either no fluid, pump, torque converter or input shaft breaking <-- all highly unusual for a 4L60e

Re: 4L60E dead?

It was working fine, full of good fluid. Then instantly all gears gone. Trans still full of fluid, no external leak. Park works, no other gears. I think the pump broke. Computer is not showing any code. I was just hoping it was a sensor or computer problem.

Re: 4L60E dead?

We can all jump in here speculate all we want but I think we should start on the easy sh@t first. Like remove the metal plug as seen in the pic provided and see if anything is obvious.

If the TC is not loose Pull one of the cooler lines off and start the vehicle. Make sure you have a catch can for the fluid. Any pressure ? This would let you know if the pump took a sh@t.

Try this and get back to all of us

Re: 4L60E dead?

I broke my pump into 5 pieces just installing the tranny. They are pretty fragile. If it is broke, go with the 10 vane pump, not the 11 or 12 vane, whichever it is. I may be wrong on vane count for both so go with the one that has lesser vanes.

Let us know what you find out.

Re: 4L60E dead?

It doesn't matter if its a 10 or 13 vane pump, if you are breaking the pump when you are installing the trans its not the number of pump vanes that are weak. most likely you did not have the TC all the way seated into the trans and you tightened up the trans to the engine and broke the tabs off of the pump rotor.... was it a used unit or rebuilt unit did they warranty your mistake ?

this is no where near what the OP is experiencing.

Had a guy tell me the same thing that you are experiencing I pulled the trans and this is what I found. Front planet Torrington bearing took a dump. Destroyed a few parts. Drop the pan most likely you have metal in the pan.

Have you checked the pump yet ? Find anything ?

Re: 4L60E dead?

That usually happens when the converter is not completely seated

Re: 4L60E dead?

The OP said he had a problem while driving, his Torque converter has been installed for a while so not sure why it would be the Converter not being seated ???????

Re: 4L60E dead?

The trans had high miles on it. I got a replacement and changed it out. The old one had damaged pump ears, and some damage showing in converter notches.
We didn't take it apart, just looked as close as we could, needed it for core.
