Just bought my 2nd K20!!

Hey everyone!

I want to share with you my recent acquisition, a 1972 K20!! This is now my 2nd truck, as a few years ago I bought a 1968 K20. I didnt NEED another truck, but this came up for sale 20 min from my house at a price that was too good to pass up!! I am more familiar with the 67-68 style trucks, so I am looking forward to learning all about the 71- 72 style and will surely have a lot of questions for the board!

It was a 350 truck but now has an OMC 225- apparently its a marine sbc 307. Doesn't run great at the moment. My plans for this truck are to keep it mostly as it is and use it as a driver for now. I have been working on perfecting my 68, but for now I just want to get this 72 on the road and drive it as is and enjoy it. It is mostly complete minus the front tow hooks (Bummer!) and in fairly good shape, as it was fixed up about 15 years ago. However they didn't do a full restoration on it and there are definitely a few things that need attention, and Ill work on it as I go. My long term goal for this truck is to restore it to factory original, but also stay true to what it is, just a good ole work truck!!

Also, Ive even come up with a name for the ole girl- Smokin' Ochre!

Check it out and let me know what you think!!

Congrats! It even came with a spare grille in the passenger seat. My K20 has the same tach as yours.

Re: Just bought my 2nd K20!!

Great find! I have a greater appreciation for the simpler K/20s these days than ever. And this one has a load of options. Some pretty cool ones. Nice truck in Oakry.

Re: Just bought my 2nd K20!!

Thanks for the replies guys! Glad you like the truck! Its mostly complete and original, but there are a few small details that I have some questions about, trying to figure out exactly what was originally on the truck.

On the SPID it lists the option BX2 Body Side molding - W
Is that the lower trim only? Was the upper trim a different option code??

Also, it lists F60 Heavy front spring. Up front it has a spring with 2 leafs and a negative arch. Is that the original spring? If they arch negative like that does it mean that they're worn out and need to be replaced? Eventually I would like to run a tall skinny 33in tire (I can get a good price on a Military 8.25r16 tire) on the truck and I read it can be done without a lift, but if my springs are worn out my plan may not work. If anyone has any input on this it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks everyone!!

Re: Just bought my 2nd K20!!

Ohh another question I have (There will probably be lots more!)...

Take a look at my front bumper (I added another photo as well). Its not quite as "pointed" as the grill is... looks to me like it was pushed in a little bit.

Is it supposed to look that way? Or is it actually bent and should follow the lines of the grill better?

Thanks!

Nice truck. And it does look to be bent . The bumper should follow the body lines. Yours looks pushed in in the center and out on the ends

Hey Guys,

Thanks for checking out my truck. Since Ive got it home I have been trying to get it running and so far have not had much luck. So I started a new thread looking for help to try and get it up and running. If anyone would care to check it out and possibly add some input or advice it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks a lot everyone. Here is a link to the new thread:

This may not help but it's all I know about front springs.

My K20 is (I believe) a relatively light-duty truck. Can't recall but it seems like the GVWR was only around 7200#. The OEM front springs were 2-leaf and sagging badly. I measured 7/8" to the bump stops and it bottomed out easily.

I replaced them many years ago with 2.5" Skyjacker Softrides and I'm still very happy with them. I measured 3 3/4" to the bump stops with the Softrides.

Incidentally I am running 255/85-16s (33") on Ford steelies with no clearance issues. Watch your offset and you should be okay without a lift. At most, you might need to lightly trim the lower front corner of the fender.

Better hurry! They are getting a lot harder to find over here than they used to be. I think most people are holding on to what they’ve got right now.

Thank you for the info, that is very helpful! Ill have to measure the bump stop height but I think I'll be ok to run the 33s I'm looking at. I have also looked into the add-a-leaf option if I need to gain a little bit more clearance. But I will keep the skyjacker soft rides in mind as well. Thanks!
