Did Burb's only have two piece driveshafts?

Was just wondering if that is the only thing they came with? I have a 2 piece shaft and my burb is bagged. I have a 4L60E so I'm going to have to have it shortened a few inches. Was just wondering about the one piece.

Yes, the suburbans all had 2 piece drive shafts, at least the 2 wheel drives. I don't know about the 4wd's but I would presume they all did too.

Learn something every day.

Trying to decide if the original drive shaft can handle the 5.3. Not doing anything special to the motor so I think it should. Just get it shortened a few inches, install all new U-Joints, a new Carrier Bearing, and slap it in.

The drive shaft is plenty tough for 5.3L. U-joints should be checked though.

Re: Did Burb's only have two piece driveshafts?

Two piece shafts were employed to stay out of the driveshaft "critical speed" range: the point at which the shaft starts to bend and swing around like a jump rope.

Critical speed is a function of shaft material and diameter, length (longer is worse), rear axle ratio (higher numerically is worse) and vehicle top speed.

You can control all of that stuff in this case, so I'd recommend a one piece.

I always use a one piece shaft whenever I can get away with it.

My '68 K20 has a 2 piece drive shaft.

From all of the 67-72 burbs I have seen, whether in person or in documentation all 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive were 2 piece drive shafts.
