If that's a mostly stock 350, change the tstat to a 195 as that is what they originally came with and that is the temps where they run best. Plus your feet will thank you when winter comes. Lot more heat from the heater with the 195 vs the 160.

Glad you got it fixed and as a bonus, seems like your temp gauge is reading pretty close to correct.

I was going to ask the forum about that; since its a summer driver only, do I need to reinstall the 195* thermostat?

On really really hot days (for Canada, anyway), I like knowing that there is no way I am going to overheat. I do a lot of highway driving (it is my daily driver and I work one town over) and although a 700R4 is on my to-do list, I am unfortunately stuck with the TH350 for now. So it turns a lot of revs, particularly at the speed I like to go. Is there much harm in keeping the 165* thermostat in there? I've heard that a higher operating temperature burns off more oil contaminants.

What application is that 165* thermostat for, anyway, if you want your temperature at 190?

The temp gauge in my 75, pulled from a later year, has 210 as the straight up mid point temp as that is where they expect it to run.

Never had an overheat problem, even towing a boat with 700lbs of camping crap in the bed with a air temp of 105 while running the AC.

You could split the difference and run a 180. That should give a running temp of ~195. That way if you do drive it in the winter, your feet will thaw out.
