Can't speak for the 6.2, but on 6.0 & 7.3 powerstrokes and the 5.9 cummins If you turn up the fuel on stock turbo they smoke like crazy. If you then upgrade the turbo the smoke almost disappears.

Re: opinion on the 6.2 diesel engine

I've got an 86 K30 6.2 and I get about 16-18 mpg. I just use it as a farm truck, it's got 4.10 gears and an SM465 tranny. The glow plug controller is bad on mine, I've got a push-button wired up on the dash to make them cycle. I would think that a 305 may have more power.

im likeing the sound of a cummins swap i might have to look in to that a lil

thanks guys for all your input im gonna try to keep my eyes open for a 6.2 that has been taken care of and aint set around and got all out of wack or find a truck with no motor and do a cummings swap would be the best thing to do i think.

Re: opinion on the 6.2 diesel engine

When your looking for a good 6.2 to use i was told to remove the radiator cap with it running and check for air bubbles. The starting is a big part of motor condition, If it got eithered even just a little bit, it could be to low on compression to start, the low compression motor can still run well once started (like my donor motor, which is why i didn't do the swap). The glowplug controllers are crap, someone on Dieselplace.com said blowing a hair dryer down the throttle body works as well better than the glowplugs, Good luck on finding one and i hope it went better than my search.

If you're thinking of a Cummins re-power and you're just wanting to drive it around more than actually haul anything I would suggest the 4 cyl motor. I know a guy that dropped one into an 86 C10 with a Getrag 5 speed and 3.08 rears. His best mpg is 27. Also, a 6 cyl Cummins will weigh more and will be harder on your front end if you aren't planning on putting it into a 1-ton.
