Healight buzzer?

Did the 87 trucks had a buzzer for the headlights? When you'd open the driver's door, and the headlights were still on, was there supposed to be a buzzer sound? Cause I want one. I've drained my battery 2 times in the past by leaving the headlights on accidentally. And sometimes I'll notice that they're still on after a short trip inside a store or something. So for me at least, it seems that its always going to be a risk that I'll leave the headlights on for too long at some point, and kill the battery.

So I'd like to get a buzzer or a chime rigged up. If they didn't come with one, does anyone have any thoughts on how to install one? I'd even be interested to hear what chime you guys think would be cool. Now I'll wait on all the incoming jokes. Maybe it should be my own voice: "Turn off the headlights, @$$****!"

Re: Healight buzzer?

I do believe GM made a cheap headlight warning kit for these older vehicles. I haven't seen one in years but I haven' really looked either. I need one too because ...well ya know.

Re: Healight buzzer?

I've experienced the same problem, but I'm planning to fix it differently.

I intend to wire the headlights through a relay, with the signal wire on the relay coming through the headlight switch AND the key switch. When I cut off the truck, the headlights cut off with it.

Re: Healight buzzer?

It was an option. My truck didn't have one, but I got one from a member on the forum.

Re: Healight buzzer?

My 91 has it. I hate the noise but it is helpful to have.
It does exist oem for the squares. I just have no idea how it works.

Re: Healight buzzer?

My 85 has one. It's a square black box that plugs in the small panel above the brake pedal.

Re: Healight buzzer?

Headlamp warning was RPO T63 after 1975. It uses a special Seatbelt buzzer. I had a 1979 G20 van with this option.

Option T63 BUZZER,HDLP ON WRNG or "Light Minder" used a special "seatbelt" buzzer module....
There's a note on part # 364080 that seems to hint that at least in 1976 it's a dealer installed option.

1976 CKGP1, 2, 3, Blazer, Jimmy, M.H.C. W/HDLP WARN BUZZER 364080
1977-1978 CKGP1, 2, 3 W/LIGHT MINDER (T63) 459387
1979 CK1, 2, 3 W/LIGHT MINDER (T63) 459387
1980-1981 CK1, 2, 3 W/HDLP WARN (T63) BUZZER, SEAT BELT WARN 14056596
1982-1984 CK1, 2 (06-16) & G1, 2, 3 W/HDLP WARN (T63) BUZZER, SEAT BELT WARN 14056596
1985-1986 CK1, 2, 3 HDLPWRNG (T63) ALARM, ST BELT & IGN KEY & LP WRNG 22529441
1987-1991 RV1, 2, 3 HDLPWRNG (T63) ALARM, ST BELT & IGN KEY & LP WRNG 22529441

The ignition key inserted warning switch must be installed in the column and wired to the buzzer socket along with a wire from the instrument panel lamps in the buzzer relay socket as well.
If the key is not in the ignition, headlamps are on, and the driver door is open it'll buzz the same as if you open the driver door with the key inserted.
You can install one if you would like that option. If the seatbelt warning buzzer socket has a gray wire from the panel lamp splice and two wires on the driver doorjamb switch your truck is wired for this option.

Re: Healight buzzer?

"This Dummy Needs a Headlight Buzzer" http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=729153 I went to the ole Pick-A-Part and collected a few for my '86. Dropped one in, worked just like the thread says

Re: Healight buzzer?

Well with the help of Natedogg I found mine, but it seems to work when I put power to it on the workbench. Any idea why it wouldn't work when installed in the truck?

After reading that thread, it looks like I have the 6 pin, not the 7 pin. That could by why it never worked for the headlights. Then again, it never worked for the key or the lights either lol. A bit odd that it makes noise on the work bench. Maybe someone here knows what fuse the buzzer is on.

Re: Healight buzzer?

I have a Viper security alarm on my 85. I realized after the fact, that an added benefit was it would not set the alarm if the key was off and any input was active (open door, motion, ANY lights ON, etc). Kinda killed 2 birds with 1 stone.

Re: Healight buzzer?

The 1985-1991 buzzer pinout... You may be able to use the late buzzer in the earlier rigs but check the wiring diagrams first.

Top row 3 terminals...
  • Circuit 8 Dash lamp wire usually gray. (only present on headlamp warning relay)
  • Circuit 140 Fused Battery power usually orange. STOP/HAZ fuse.
  • Circuit 80 Ground when key inserted and driver door open usually green. Open with key out of the ignition.
  • Blank no terminal

Bottom row four terminals.
  • Circuit 238 seatbelt retractor switch. Ground when contacts closed usually black/white.
  • Circuit 150 Main Relay ground to buss bar usually black.
  • Circuit 237 Belt warning lamp.
  • Circuit 39 Fused Ignition power (IGN fuse) Pink/Black.

My guess is the gray wire from the dash lamps is already there... you just need the correct relay. If it's not present it isn't rocket science to add a wire from the open circuit 9 parking lamp terminal on the headlamp switch to the open circuit 8 position on the seatbelt relay. The wire needs to have female Packard 56 terminals on both ends.

I'd be willilng to bet GM used the same relay on the T400 CK trucks and G-series vans.

Yeah one member said he got one from a 97 model and plugged it into his 85 and then he had the headlight buzzer. So its most likely there.

Re: Healight buzzer?

Well I ordered a 7-pin model off of ebay as recommended. Plugged it in, and got the desired results. I now have a steady beep as headlight warning. And it does not seem to function for the dome light, the seat belts or the door. Which is great. Just needed the headlights.

So thanks to all for the help. No more dead battery from forgetfulness.

Re: Healight buzzer?

Had me scrambling to check my SPID because I remembered there being one on my Suburban and was all proud when I came up with RPO T63. Continued to read the thread and of course hatzie comes in and knocks it out of the park. Good job all.
