davischevy's not so epic road trip

I have expressed my desire to drive the Pacific Coast Highway here. My brother in law was up for the trip, so here we go. WE are in Butte, MT tonight. WE spent the morning around Wall and Rapid City, SD.

Subscribed! Sounds like a great trip. The only problem with the PCH is there never seems to be enough time to really take your time and soak it all in...

Re: davischevy's not so epic road trip

We are in no hurry. WE have to be back by Thanksgiving, and I think my wife sold the house today. I told her to text me a forwarding address.

I don't expect to see any where near everything, but we will hit the high spots.

Cool pictures. I wouldn’t mind checking out those places..but my wife has been there with her parents so I’m not sure I’ll get up that way.
Stay safe in your travels.

Here’s a couple ‘high’ spots along the way

Have a fun trip

Sounds like an epic trip to me. Any time you can travel with no time table has to be epic. Where do you hope to hit the PCH to start?

It should be a nice trip. I've ridden it a couple of times on my bike.

Taking it all in no doubt.
You might want to avoid Vail pass if youre heading that way. They had snow yesterday. Shut down the road for spell.

Re: davischevy's not so epic road trip

Wow, you're going to be driving some serious miles!

My wife and I both loved driving the PCH, Driven about as much of it as you can once, most of it a 2nd time, and all of the southern section a 3rd.

This is a great resource:

http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/display.php?page=sr1

It looks like the 1 and 101 are finally open (just down to 1 lane in a couple spots). There were a couple large landslides and the Pfeiffer Canyon Bride was out in 2017.

Have fun! We only had 10 days each time we went, a month would be epic!

That looks like a blast. I have been to deadwood a few times and I always enjoy the drive into Wyoming.
Enjoy yourself and be safe.

Re: davischevy's not so epic road trip

Enjoy your trip. Me the misses and a friend did the west coast. We left NY on July 28th and returned on September 16th. 11552 miles. We did it on a Harley a Honda and a Yamaha. I would recommend the KOA on the west side of Yellowstone if your camping at all . But its probably snowing there now. Reading CA was nice as was Eureka CA.

Also hit as much of route 66 as possible.

We planned on doing the PCH down to San Diego. But the mountain slide in Big Sur took that out of the trip.

Let me know when you are in the vicinity of Malibu. We could have a meet-up. It's a bit south of where I am, but not that much. I commuted for many years, and hate it with a passion. So, it will depend on the time of day that you want to meet up. Lemme know!

WE made it to Olympia, WA.

In a red truck, my brother in law's, no trailer.

Tonight we have been planning our trip down the coast, and I'll have to admit it's a bit overwhelming.

Go see Ferndale, CA along the Eel River. Out beyond is Cape Mendocino, the farthest point west in California. There is so much to see in Humbodlt Co along the coast. Fern Canyon is one great stop. I lived in Fortuna for a while. Wave when you pass by

I get to Fortuna every couple years, I have a friend whose house overlooks the Eel River. You are right it’s beautiful! One of a kind micro-climate there.

Cool! I lived on Hillside Dr going out the back side of town. This was 76/77, but been back to visit my friend in Carlotta. I know the view, all the way out the river bottom and over the ocean. We built a big shop for an excavating contractor on that bluff by the airport. You could see a storm coming from an hour away.

my wife and I did 101 all the way from Aberdeen WA down to Sonoma CA a couple years ago. it was a fun trip. you will not get better scenery than the OR coast. I liked the Redwoods in No Cal. Eureka was probably the worse town I have ever been to. my wife and I joke that it is like Aberdeen, only more shabby.
