Re: Project Teal 72

Coming along real nice Doug!!! Now i need to get some wheels back on mine so we can go to the track at the same time.. What kind of b.s. are you trying to achieve on those 15x11's? If they turn out nice, i'll bring you another set to do lol!!!! (b.s.= backspacing)

Re: Project Teal 72

I got the wheels cut in two this weekend.
Hopefully I can get the bands from the steel shop this week.
Credit for the chop saw idea goes to my dad.

Re: Project Teal 72

The original plan got scrapped because it wouldn't have cleared the brake drums.
I decided to just cut two and put bands in to widen by 4 inches

Heres a couple of pics of an as yet unwelded 15x12

Re: Project Teal 72

I finally got time to tack one of the wheels together. Next thing to do is see how straight it is, hopefully less than .010 runout.

Re: Project Teal 72

Doug,
Looks like a real cool idea to chop the wheels. So, how did you true them up once cut? I would think you could chuck it up on the lathe and trim them straight pretty easy. Very interesting!

Re: Project Teal 72

I ran the indicator on it while it was still on the hub after cutting and it was only out by .003

That's really good! So, how did you secure the cutoff saw while cutting the rim? I guess you had some help spinning while cutting it? Very cool. Those rims are gonna be wide! One of a kind too!

I had it sitting on half of a milk crate and was standing on the base.
It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.
My dad timed the second one at 7 minutes.

Re: Project Teal 72

I made a little progress over the weekend.
Had to cut the wheel back apart.(too much runout .060)
built some clamps to keep the pieces straight.
got all the welding done, runout now is under .030 finally.
started grinding the welds.
80 or 90 inches of weld, this is gonna take a while.

Re: Project Teal 72

Just a little more progress.
I got all the welds on the wheels ground down smooth.
Precision lines to follow to trim the bed.
Then followed CROOKED lines with CROOKED cuts.
And I found out tha M-H makes a drag radial thats big enough. 390/45/15

Re: Project Teal 72

I got the tires mounted and balanced saturday.
one was nice and straight and just needed a little weight, the other took more weight than I liked but it still balanced.
when I mounted them on the truck I realized that it needs to be lowered a little more.
